INGLEWOOD, Calif. – He is not exactly revealing trade secrets, but jockey Alonso Quinonez has a plan for how to ride Premier Pegasus in Saturday’s $100,000 Hollywood Prevue Stakes. “I think it will be easy to get the lead and then he can relax,” Quinonez said. “I shouldn’t say that. Now, the other jockeys will know.” Quinonez has ridden Premier Pegasus to wins in both the colt’s two starts – a 44-1 upset in a maiden race at Del Mar over 5 1/2 furlongs on July 24 and a front-running win in the Jack Goodman Stakes over six furlongs here Oct. 23. The Grade 3 Prevue Stakes is run over seven furlongs. Quinonez thinks the distance will suit the colt, who is owned and trained by his breeder, Myung Kwon Cho. “He showed me a lot from the first to second race,” Quinonez said. Premier Pegasus was pre-entered for the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile at Churchill Downs on Nov. 6 but never left California. Rafael Martinez, who assists Cho with his horses, said the horse was never seriously considered for the BC Juvenile because of the two-week gap between races. “We decided to leave him here,” Martinez said Thursday. “I think he’ll run good if he runs like he did in his last race.” The Prevue drew a field of six, and Premier Pegasus may not face a fierce challenge for the early lead. The race will be the California debut for High Level Jeff, who won his first two starts at Calder in October – a maiden race and an allowance race – for trainer and co-owner Steve Dwoskin and is now trained by Doug O’Neill. California-based owner Paul Reddam became a partner with Dwoskin in the Vindication colt before the allowance race win Oct. 28. Aside from High Level Jeff, the maiden race winners Contemplated, Industry Leader, and Northern Indy are making their stakes debuts. Contemplated was entered but scratched from the California Cup Juvenile on Oct. 30. He has not started since winning a maiden race for statebreds at Del Mar on Aug. 11. Northern Indy won a maiden race over a mile by five lengths at Golden Gate Fields on Oct. 28 but was not as impressive as Industry Leader, who won his debut by 2 1/4 lengths here Oct. 31. Awesome Patriot, fifth in the Goodman, also starts.
