ARCADIA, Calif. - For two guys about to split town, Sunday started as a normal day for jockeys Flavien Prat and Umberto Rispoli. Both are scheduled to relocate to New York in coming weeks, but were at Santa Anita early Sunday for workouts. After all, there are still mounts to be ridden in coming weeks before departure. Prat, the dominant rider in Southern California in recent years, stunned the racing community with his announcement over the weekend. On Sunday, he spent part of the morning visiting trainers, several of whom played an integral part in his success in recent years and in his foundation in California racing a decade ago. Back then, Prat spent winters in California and the rest of the year in his native France. One of his first stops on Sunday was to trainer Richard Mandella’s stable. :: Win big at Santa Anita: Get DRF Past Performances, Picks, Clocker Reports and Betting Strategies.  “He’s been a great supporter in my career and my life when I didn’t have support from anyone,” Prat said of Mandella. Prat worked four horses on Sunday, including the multiple Grade 1 winner Dr. Schivel, who is scheduled to be sent to Dubai for the Group 1 Golden Shaheen at Meydan Racecourse on March 26. Trained by Mark Glatt, Dr. Schivel worked six furlongs in 1:12.40. Prat is booked to ride Dr. Schivel in Dubai as well as Hot Rod Charlie in the Dubai World Cup, and Pinehurst in the United Arab Emirates Derby, also on March 26. By then, Prat will be nearing his departure from California, first going to Keeneland for that track’s April meeting and then on to Belmont Park at the end of April. Through Saturday, Prat was comfortably ahead in the standings with 60 wins, 25 clear of Juan Hernandez, who was second. Rispoli, who is also planning to ride at Keeneland before moving to New York, has won 15 races through Saturday, good enough to rank seventh in the standings. After the races Saturday, Prat said the decision to move to New York is based on his desire to win an Eclipse Award as the nation’s outstanding rider. Prat was nominated for the award for the first time in 2021, but lost the prize to Joel Rosario. :: Access morning workout reports straight from the tracks and get an edge with DRF Clocker Reports In 2021, Prat, 29, won 246 races and had mounts that earned $23,214,813, both career bests. “I think I’ve got to the point where I can get better and the opportunity is nice,” he said of the move. “It’s not going to be easy. I want to get out of my comfort zone. It’s going to be a challenge.” On Sunday, Prat said he plans to return to Southern California to ride next winter. Rispoli mentioned on Sunday that the challenge of riding among a deep roster of jockeys in New York was a reason for his move. A native of Italy, Rispoli moved to California from Hong Kong in late 2019 and immediately gained a place in the top 10. At the 2020 Del Mar summer meeting, Prat won the title with 50 wins, one more than Rispoli, in a battle that lasted through the season.
