HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – There are always winners and losers at the post position draw for races run at 1 1/8 miles on the main track at Gulfstream Park because of the relatively short run to the first turn. And Saturday’s $3 million Pegasus World Cup Invitational was no exception. Only 10 of the 225 horses who have started from posts 9 through 12 have won races carded at 1 1/8 miles on the dirt here over the past 13 years, or just over 4 percent. That statistic will not instill confidence in the connections of Last Judgment, Code of Honor, Mr Freeze, or Math Wizard, who drew posts 9 through 12 for Saturday’s main event. On the other end of the spectrum is 5-2 morning-line favorite and Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile winner Knicks Go. The speedster figures to go postward an even shorter price after having drawn ideally in post 4 for his local debut in the Grade 1 Pegasus World Cup. The starting lineup for the Pegasus World Cup underwent some late changes Wednesday when trainer Jack Sisterson announced Cigar Mile winner True Timber would be withdrawn, having coming up “slightly off” at his Palm Meadows training base. “The ailment is sufficiently minor that while it appears he might be able to run in the Pegasus, we always prioritize the best interest of the horse and have elected to defer to caution,” Sisterson said via Twitter. True Timber’s defection opened up a spot in the field for Last Judgment, who wheels back on short rest following his 6 1/2-length victory in the Sunshine Classic against Florida-breds here last Saturday. Trainer Brad Cox said 24 hours before the draw that the ideal scenario would be for Knicks Go to get anywhere from post 4 through 6 for the Pegasus. “I think he’s fast enough, as long as he gets away well, to overcome one of the outside posts if need be,” Cox said. “But it would be nice not to have to worry about it.” Now Cox won’t have to. Code of Honor, runner-up in the Grade 1 Clark in his 2020 finale, is the second choice in the Pegasus at 9-2 on the morning line. He and jockey Tyler Gaffalione will face a tough task from post 10. Code of Honor’s trainer, Shug McGaughey, said before the draw: “I’d rather not get way out going a mile and an eighth here, but Tyler knows this racetrack. He’ll know where to position him.” :: Pegasus World Cup 2021: Contenders, entries, results, news, odds, picks, past performances, and more.
