LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Ten new names are among the 23 separately listed entries in the third pool in the 2016 Kentucky Derby Future Wager, which opens Friday at noon Eastern and runs concurrent this weekend with the lone futures pool offered on the 2016 Kentucky Oaks. Although the mutuel field, the 24th or “all others” option, often is the favorite in both the Derby and Oaks pools offered at this time of year, individual horses are listed as favorites on the morning lines released this week by Churchill Downs: Mohaymen is the 7-2 choice in Derby Pool 3, and Songbird is 3-1 for the Oaks. Results are predicated on the May 6 Oaks and May 7 Derby. Derby Pool 3 closes Sunday at 6 p.m. Eastern, and the Oaks pool closes 30 minutes later at 6:30. Two prep races apiece will be run Saturday: the Tampa Bay Derby and San Felipe for 3-year-olds, and the Honeybee and Florida Oaks for fillies. Given that odds on the future wager are not locked in until the pools close, many bettors will choose to wait for the results of those races before wagering. :: ROAD TO THE KENTUCKY DERBY: Prep races, point standings, replays The new names for Derby Pool 3 are American Dubai, Cupid, Destin, Economic Model, Forevamo, Matt King Coal, Riker, Swipe, Suddenbreakingnews, and Uncle Lino. Horses displaced from Pool 2 were Airoforce, Awesome Banner, Cherry Wine, Cocked and Loaded, Collected, Discreetness, Gettysburg, Gift Box, Tom’s Ready, and Vorticity. Two horses, Matt King Cole and Swipe, actually were individual interests in Pool 1 but grouped in the field for Pool 2. Pool 1 ran Nov. 26-29 and Pool 2 ran Feb. 12-14, with the field closing as the favorite in both. The fourth and final pool is set for April 1-3. Combined handle in Pool 2 was $441,209, which was down less than 2 percent from the corresponding pool in 2015. Handle on Pool 3 last year was $422,330, with the field closing as the 4-1 favorite over eventual Derby winner American Pharoah (8-1). Win and exacta wagering are available in both pools. The Derby pools have been offered since 1999, with a single Oaks pool introduced in 2003. Refunds are not allowed, and at least one “buyer beware” caveat is in effect for the Oaks with No. 16 Polar River, whose trainer, Doug Watson, told a British media outlet this week it is very unlikely the filly will be sent to America for the race. Last year in the Oaks futures, the field closed as the 5-2 favorite, with the eventual Oaks winner, Lovely Maria, closing at 39-1. She was 7-1 on Oaks Day. Combined handle on the 2015 Oaks pool was $115,615. The highest handle ever for an Oaks pool was $126,039 in 2013. Real-time odds and will-pays are available on television monitors at tracks and wagering outlets, as well as through the Churchill websites, kentuckyderby.com and kentuckyoaks.com.
