ETOBICOKE, Ontario – One could go several different ways in Sunday’s featured conditioned allowance with a $50,000 claiming option at Woodbine. Horses coming out of the talented Playmea Tune’s recent win in a similar spot should be competitive in the six-furlong Tapeta sprint. Souped Up, third by a length to Playmea Tune, should be dangerous as the possible favorite with his tactical speed. Trained by Ron Sadler, the 4-year-old has won 2 of 6 outings at the meet while earning Beyer Speed Figures mostly in the upper 80s. Souped Up cleared the first allowance condition decisively going seven furlongs in his June 16 season opener and went on to run second to the upwardly mobile Dresden Row at this level. He picked up some black type when a distant second to reigning Canadian champion male sprinter Patches O’Houlihan in the July 28 Pink Lloyd Stakes for Ontario-sired stock. Sadler got lucky when a leg of the Woodbine Turf Sprint Series was taken off the grass Oct. 3 and Souped Up romped by 6 1/2 lengths with a career-high 91 Beyer. Most recently, he fought for the lead along the rail with two others, including heavily favored Playmea Tune, before weakening late. Rafael Hernandez will ride Souped Up again from post 3 in the bulky 13-horse field. After getting away slowly, stretch-runner Gilt Edge awaited room before closing outside for fourth on Oct. 20, finishing 2 1/4 lengths behind Playmea Tune. His previous race on the grass was poor, but the 3-year-old got a 90 Beyer when winning a nonwinners-of-two allowance/$50,000 claimer for 3-year-old sprinters on Tapeta on Aug. 25. Daisuke Fukumoto will have to work out a trip after breaking from post 6 on Gilt Edge, who has lots of speed to close behind if they all hook up. :: Bet the races with a $200 First Deposit Match + FREE All Access PPs! He graduated over 7 1/2 furlongs around two turns on the inner turf Aug. 25 and then doubled up against nonwinners-of-two allowance types while beating two next-out winners and receiving an 86 Beyer. Trainer Marty Drexler sends out the speedy Giant Teddy and win-shy Old Chestnut. Giant Teddy scored twice at the first allowance level in September when competing for the $32,000 optional-claiming tag. He attended a slow pace last out before taking control in the stretch, only to give way late in another sprint at the same level. Old Chestnut wound up second on the turf and fifth on the Tapeta in his last two starts against conditioned allowance/$80,000 claiming opposition. This third race off a summer break could be a peak one as he tries to find the winner’s circle for the first time since April 2023. Forester’s Fortune has been rock solid for trainer Rodney Barrow but is without a win this year. The 7-year-old was demoted from first to second by disqualification in a main turf sprint in July and subsequently ran second to favored Outlaw King in the Vice Regent Stakes for Ontario-breds. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
