Fonner Park’s late pick five jackpot has a mandatory payout Wednesday and could go through the barns of the meet’s two leading trainers, Kelli Martinez and Isai Gonzalez. The 50-cent bet runs on races 5-9. First post for the nine-race card is 4 p.m. Central. The program closes a historic meet for Fonner, which raced through the initial stages of the coronavirus pandemic and reached new handle heights as one of the few tracks in action. “I have received countless comments from large bettors that are appreciative not only of our product, but they like betting over a five-eighths of a mile racetrack,” said Chris Kotulak, chief executive officer of Fonner. “They like handicapping over it.” The battle for the training title could come down to the late pick five. Martinez, who had a one-win advantage on Gonzalez entering the week, looks to strike in the first leg with Alex of Ice. Alex of Ice is a logical choice off a runner-up finish at this nonwinners-of-two allowance condition over 6 1/2 furlongs. The race was his first in more than three months, and he can move forward for the out. Alex of Ice also owns the field’s best last-race Beyer Speed Figure, and earlier in his career raced at top meets in Arkansas and Kentucky. Leading rider Armando Martinez has the mount from post 9. The chief threats appear to be Drastic and Best Trick Yet, who could be strong through the stretch as he shortens up in distance. The sixth race is an optional $7,500 claimer for Nebraska-breds at six furlongs that carries nonwinners-of-three allowance conditions. It’s for fillies and mares – as are all of the remaining races in the sequence. Chamber Doors, a two-time stakes winner who has been right there all meet long, has tactical speed and could get an ideal trip off leading contender Judge On the Run. Judge On the Run was a clear winner over some of these last out. Ubetcha Ima Bumper, a nine-time stakes winner, gets the widest gate but already has had success from a similar post this meet. Kelli Martinez is back in action in the seventh with leading contender Star Hunter. He must overcome post 9 in this $5,000 claimer at six furlongs, but he has been facing better. Star Hunter is a five-time winner facing some less-experienced rivals. The threats include Our Annabelle, who bid from off the pace last out in a style change that yielded a third-place finish. Saygoodnightgracie has won three of her last four and was second in a stakes at this distance in March. Gonzalez appears to have the top two contenders in the eighth in Dixie Flyer and Indy N Roses. The optional $10,000 claiming race carries nonwinners-of-four conditions and will be run over six furlongs. Dixie Flyer is back in the overnight ranks off three straight stakes appearances for which she brought home checks. Indy N Roses can be closer to the pace than she found herself last time, when she missed by a nose. She owns the field’s best last-race Beyer Figure. In the meet finale, Pretty Rich is a class play in the $5,000 conditioned claimer over 6 1/2 furlongs. She was favored over allowance foes last out. Others of interest include S C Angel and Dreamingndiamonds. The forecast calls for a high of 77 degrees and a 10 percent chance of rain, according to The Weather Channel. ◗ Andrew Beyer will handicap the pick five with Fonner’s Chris Kotulak in a video that will appear on drf.com.
