Keeneland begins its final four-day stand on Wednesday with a carryover of $301,896 into the late pick 5, which runs from the fourth race through the eighth race. Three of those races drew overflow casts at the entry box; the other races have fields of 10 and 12 entrants, respectively; and a pair of allowance-level events that serve as the nominal features have some familiar, stakes-seasoned names, making for some interesting puzzles. Race 4: The sequence begins with a claiming race with a purse of $69,000 and a tag of $32,000. Underdressed – who boasts a sharp victory in a claiming race for a $25,000 tag two starts back at Horseshoe Indianapolis – and Strava are the morning-line favorites. The latter takes a true drop in class. After a pair of strong efforts at Oaklawn earlier this year, he finished 10th in the Knicks Go at Churchill Downs. After nearly four months away from the races, he finished fifth in a $115,000 allowance/optional-claiming race at Saratoga, in which he was entered for the $62,500 tag. He is likely to be better in his second outing off the layoff. Race 5: This maiden special weight for fillies and mares going 1 1/16 miles on the turf, is led by a strong favorite in Birdwatching. Two runner-up efforts in one-mile turf races – the latter at Kentucky Downs, where the distance likely played closer to this 1 1/16 miles – give her a strong foundation for this race, in which some members of the field are trying turf for the first time, or going two turns for the first time. :: Play Keeneland with the most trusted information in horse racing! Race 6: Grade 2 winner Intricate, the only filly to defeat divisional leader Thorpedo Anna, pushes the reset button on her campaign in a $120,000 allowance/optional-claiming race at 1 1/8 miles. It is open to 3-year-old fillies who have never won two races other-than, who have never won three, or for a claiming tag. Intricate followed a maiden win going two turns at Keeneland last fall with a win in the Grade 2 Golden Rod at Churchill Downs, with Thorpedo Anna second. This year, Intricate is winless in five starts, most recently finishing third behind Thorpedo Anna in the Grade 1 Coaching Club American Oaks, then a well-beaten fifth in the Grade 1 Alabama. Everland has spent the bulk of this year in stakes company, most recently finishing fifth in the Grade 1 Cotillion, also behind Thorpedo Anna. She is often dismissed because her best stakes efforts have been on Turfway Park’s Tapeta, but has deceptively creditable dirt efforts, including at this level. Her most recent allowance outing was a third in August at Ellis Park, beaten just a head after a rough stretch run and ultimately moved to second by a disqualification. After opening the year with a runner-up effort to multiple graded stakes winner My Mane Squeeze, Landed has won three straight races, including the Fleet Indian at this distance against fellow New York-breds. She’s likely to set the pace, attended by Audacious and Musical Note, both last-out allowance winners for top barns. Race 7: This 5 1/2-furlong, $140,000 allowance race on turf for older horses also boasts a strong field where spreading is advised, with graded stakes winners Arrest Me Red, Mo Stash, Stitched, and That’s Right and stakes winners Agent Peter Graves, Bushido, Eamonn, Front Run the Fed, Mischievous Rogue, Outadore, and Sousa Summer lining up. Arrest Me Red is a deserving morning-line pick, as he has won both his allowance-level outings this year, including a front-running score at Kentucky Downs last out and he is well drawn on the rail for a similar trip. Arrest Me Red has also defeated a few in this field recently, including Outadore in a Turfway score in March, and, narrowly, Mo Stash when they were second and third, respectively, in the Preview Turf Sprint at Ellis Park. But Mo Stash merits a look for the rematch, returning to a course where he is a graded stakes winner, and a distance he is fond of. Although he won’t get the easy lead that has produced some of his best efforts, he has only once missed the board in a turf sprint – and that came at the graded stakes level, at the hands of divisional leader Cogburn. Race 8: The nightcap, a $100,000 maiden special weight for juveniles, has a strong favorite in Touchy, by the red-hot Nyquist. In a field comprised mainly of first-time starters, he has made two starts, both in stakes company. After finishing second to the consistent Studlydoright on debut in the Tremont, he was fourth in the Grade 2 Saratoga Special. Since then, he has fired a number of bullet works at his Keeneland base. Longshot seekers for the exotics should note that Campaign Trail was third to East Avenue, a subsequent Grade 1 winner, with a troubled trip on debut at Ellis, which saw him moved to second with a disqualification. He was eighth in his next outing at Churchill, but with another poor trip. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering? Check out DRF's Handicapping 101 and Wagering 101 pages.
