OZONE PARK, N.Y. – Less than 24 hours before he runs White Abarrio in the $20 million Saudi Cup in Saudi Arabia, trainer Rick Dutrow Jr. will have keen interest in the Friday goings-on at Aqueduct where the graded stakes winner Petulante will make his first start for Dutrow in a multi-conditioned allowance race. A winner of four of six starts including the Grade 3 Salvator Mile at Monmouth Park in June – his last start – Petulante returns to action with some high hopes among his handlers. Previously trained by Victor Barboza, Petulante was transferred to Dutrow last fall by owner Luis Gavignano. “If we get him to the level we think he can get to and he doesn’t have any troubles or anything bothering him, we’re expecting him to be a really nice horse,” said Blake Dutrow, Rick’s nephew and New York-based assistant. “We kind of have high hopes for him. Friday, we should get a pretty good line on where he’s at.” :: Bet the races with a $200 First Deposit Match + FREE All Access PPs! Join DRF Bets. Rick Dutrow said in December that the horse came to him with some foot issues. Ian McKinlay, a farrier who has worked on many of Dutrow’s horses over the years, including White Abarrio, has equipped Petulante with glue-on shoes. “Luckily, the owners allowed us to be patient with the horse getting there because he came in with some foot troubles, which I believe he probably had for a while,” Blake Dutrow said. “He should be ready for Friday. We tried to pick as soft a spot as we could for him. I know the race came up a little tough. If he runs his race, he definitely fits.” The race drew 10 for the one-turn mile, including the Dutrow-trained Lost in Rome, who came off a 201-day layoff to win a $50,000 claimer here on Monday. Blake Dutrow said Wednesday it was not yet decided if Lost in Rome will run back. Anejo and Olympic Dreams were both cross-entered in Saturday’s $100,000 Haynesfield Stakes here for New York-breds going one mile. Trainer Doug O’Neill said Anejo would scratch Friday and run Saturday. Trainer Pat Quick said Wednesday he was not yet sure which race Olympic Dreams would run in. The multiple stakes winner Law Professor got back to his winning ways in an allowance race here on Jan. 28. However, he has run mostly in two-turn races. His two wins at a mile have come around two turns at Santa Anita. Guntown and Synthesis finished one-two in this same condition Dec. 29. Guntown is now in for the optional-claiming price of $80,000, while Synthesis is running under one of the three allowance conditions. Winit beat Guntown a half-length going a mile in the mud Dec. 2. He has finished fourth and then last in two tries at this level. Synthesis is trained by David Jacobson, who also has Divine Armor in the field. Divine Armor was third in this condition two back before finishing fifth in the Grade 3 Toboggan on Feb. 3. Dance Code completes the field. The feature goes as race 7 on an eight-race card that begins at 1:20 p.m. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering? Check out DRF's Handicapping 101 and Wagering 101 pages.
