HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – Most of the field for the $3 million Pegasus World Cup had their final pre-race workouts last weekend, including Cyberknife, the 5-2 morning-line favorite in a lineup of 12 older horses. Cyberknife, who will be making the final start of his career in the Grade 1 Pegasus before going to stud at Spendthrift Farm, went five furlongs in 1:01.20 Saturday at trainer Brad Cox’s winter base at the Fair Grounds. “It’s really amazing that he’s been able to stay as good as he has, mentally and physically,” said Cox. “He’s improved a tremendous amount mentally over the last six to eight months. Physically, he looks amazing. He’s given us all the signs that he’s primed for a big effort.” :: Get ready for Gulfstream Park racing with DRF Past Performances, Picks, and Clocker Reports.  Cyberknife will have Florent Geroux aboard when he breaks from post 10 in the 1 1/8-mile Pegasus. Coincidentally, it was five years ago here at Gulfstream when Cyberknife’s sire, Gun Runner, won the 2018 Pegasus from post 10 with Geroux aboard in the final race of his career. Gun Runner already has established himself as a world-class sire. Cyberknife “definitely is facing a very good group of horses,” said Cox, who won the Pegasus two years ago with Knicks Go. “I think as long as he can get involved early, we should be okay. I think this distance and configuration could be just right for his style.” In all, 14 are entered in the Pegasus, including two also-eligibles. Proxy (post 1, Joel Rosario), a second Fair Grounds shipper, is the second program choice at 9-2 on the track line made by Pete Aiello. The next two on the odds line are Skippylongstocking (post 7, Jose Ortiz), one of three Pegasus runners for trainer Saffie Joseph Jr., and Defunded (post 5, Irad Ortiz Jr.), a California invader trained by Bob Baffert. Meanwhile, a quarantine has been imposed on Barn 21 on the Gulfstream backstretch after a horse tested positive on Saturday for the equine herpesvirus. But the quarantine did not appear to be affecting shipping plans for out-of-town trainers such as Paulo Lobo, who said Monday morning that he still intended to send Ivar and two other horses here Tuesday from his Kentucky base. Ivar is a lukewarm program favorite for the Grade 1, $1 million Pegasus World Cup Turf on Saturday. “From what I am told, it is okay to send the horses,” said Lobo. Ivar, with Javier Castellano riding, will break from post 10 in the 1 1/8-mile Pegasus Turf. Twelve will run. Shantisara (post 9, Irad Ortiz Jr.) is the morning-line choice in a field of 11 in the Grade 3, $500,000 Pegasus Filly and Mare Turf on Saturday. She’ll be looking to give trainer Chad Brown a second straight victory in the 1 1/16-mile race. Brown won the inaugural running last year with Regal Glory. First post for the 13-race Saturday card is 10:50 a.m. Eastern. Besides the three Pegasus events, five other stakes (including four graded) are part of the undercard. The Pegasus goes as the 13th and last race (5:40), preceded by the Filly and Mare Turf as race 11 and the Pegasus Turf as race 12. NBC will have live coverage of the Pegasus races on a 90-minute broadcast starting at 4:30. There is no walkup admission for Saturday. It was the fourth straight win for Hope In Him, and the third since the 4-year-old gelding was claimed in October by trainer Barry Croft. It was the second Tapeta record set last week, following a 1:01.61 clocking for 5 1/2 furlongs by Extendo in a Jan. 18 starter/optional race. ◗ Candy Man Rocket made an auspicious return to action Saturday for Bill Mott in winning the ninth race, a $74,400 classified allowance, with authority. The 5-year-old Candy Ride horse had gone unraced for nearly a year. He earned a career-best 94 Beyer in winning the six-furlong race by 2 1/4 lengths under Junior Alvarado. ◗ Roaring Forties earned a 90 Beyer in posting his first stakes victory Saturday in the $75,000 Sunshine Turf for older Florida-breds. “He’s an amazing horse,” trainer Katerina Vassilieva said of the 7-year-old gelding with 24 starts. Shaun Bridgmohan was the winning jockey. ◗ Jeiron Barbosa was scheduled to ride for the first time in Florida on Wednesday and Thursday at Gulfstream. Barbosa, based at Laurel Park in Maryland, came south to attend the Eclipse Awards dinner Thursday night in Palm Beach, where he is one of three finalists for the outstanding apprentice rider of 2022. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
