LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Zandon may be trainer Chad Brown’s best 3-year-old dirt horse. Jack Christopher was definitely his best 2-year-old dirt horse. About five hours before Brown sends out Zandon as the likely favorite in Saturday’s 148th Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs, he’ll bring Jack Christopher back to the races for his 3-year-old debut as the probable favorite in the Grade 2, $500,000 Pat Day Mile. Jack Christopher, a son of Munnings, went 2 for 2 in 2021, including a 2 3/4-length score in the Grade 1 Champagne at Belmont Park. Made the morning-line favorite for the $2 million Breeders’ Cup Juvenile at Del Mar in November, Jack Christopher was scratched the day before the race due to a shin injury. Brown said to help in the healing process a screw was put into and subsequently removed from the shin. Jack Christopher returned to the work tab on Feb. 27 at Payson Park in Florida and has 10 breezes leading up to his return. “Of course, I would have rather gotten the horse started a little earlier in the year to see where he could take us on the Derby trail, but it wasn’t to be,” Brown said. “Throwing him in a stakes race like this off the layoff is challenging, but he’s a super-talented horse. I like the distance of the race, I like the fact he’s against his own age group. He handled the mile in the Champagne just fine.” Jack Christopher will break from post 5 under Jose Ortiz in this 12-horse field. :: Get Derby Clocker Reports from Mike Welsch and the DRF Clocker Team to access exclusive insights from the morning workouts Doppelganger will be turning back in distance after finishing fourth going 1 1/8 miles in the Grade 1 Arkansas Derby. Doppelganger’s lone win from four starts came going six furlongs at Los Alamitos. “We learned a lot in the Arkansas Derby in the aspect of the type of trip he may enjoy, and so we’ll implement those tactics,” trainer Tim Yakteen said. “I think we’ll get more of a stalking trip, let him get into stride. There’ll be a legitimate pace, and we’ll take advantage of the [long] stretch. It’s a contentious group, but he’s training lights out and we’re going into the race with confidence.” John Velazquez rides Doppelganger from post 10. My Prankster, who finished fourth behind Jack Christopher in the Champagne, won the Grade 3 Swale at Gulfstream in February. He is coming off a fourth-place finish behind Old Homestead in the Lafayette Stakes on April 8 at Keeneland. “The winner was good on the day, and we chased him around there four wide and he never came back to him and he just kind of ran evenly,” Pletcher said. My Prankster will break from post 11 with Luis Saez up. Pletcher also sends out Major General, who last September won the Grade 3 Iroquois here. Following a last-place finish in the Tampa Bay Derby to begin his 3-year-old season, Major General, with blinkers added, finished second in the Grade 3 Lexington Stakes at Keeneland. Major General, turning back to a one-turn mile from the 1 1/16 miles of the Lexington, breaks from the rail Saturday under Irad Ortiz Jr. :: Kentucky Derby Headquarters: Get the latest news, info on contenders, past performances, picks, and more  “Don’t like the post,” Pletcher said. “He didn’t appreciate the kickback at Tampa at all. This race has a lot more speed in it than the Lexington. He’s just going to have to work out a trip from the inside.” If you throw out the Lafayette, where he was too far back and wide in finishing 11th of 12, Tejano Twist is in with an upset chance. He has run well sprinting, including a victory in the $200,000 Lively Shively Stakes here last November. Joe Rocco Jr. rides Tejano Twist from post 6 for trainer Bret Calhoun. O Captain’s lone victory came on the front end sprinting at Gulfstream last summer. The third-place finisher behind Simplification in the Grade 2 Fountain of Youth, he will likely have to use his speed from post 12 in this spot. Trademark, Pappacap, and Ben Diesel are all turning back to a one-turn mile after getting soundly beaten in Grade 1 two-turn stakes that were won by horses competing in the Kentucky Derby. Trademark, a son of Upstart trained by Vicki Oliver, is 2 for 2 at Churchill Downs. Howling Time went 2 for 3 at Churchill last fall, all for trainer Dale Romans. Trafalgar won his maiden going a one-turn mile here last October and has been freshened by trainer Al Stall after a seventh behind Epicenter in the Risen Star Stakes in February.
