OZONE PARK, N.Y. – Parx Racing-based Danny Velazquez, trainer of Triple Crown hopeful Brooklyn Strong, was released from a Bucks County, Pa., hospital Sunday night after suffering injuries as the result of a freak accident Saturday morning at Parx. Velazquez said he was aboard his stable pony jogging a horse clockwise, or the opposite way of regular training, when a horse trained by Richard Vega unseated its rider and ran into Velazquez and his pony. :: Bet horse racing on DRF Bets. The pony had to be put down, the racehorse had to be put down, and I was in the hospital.” Velazquez said he suffered a lacerated liver, a swollen chest, and an unspecified injury to his right bicep. Velazquez said he was scheduled to visit a specialist to examine his right arm. “I’m having trouble lifting it,” Velazquez said. “I have a big bruise on it. I don’t know if I got stepped on. I know the pony landed on me after we did the front flip.” While Velazquez was in the hospital, his staff proceeded to carry on and worked Brooklyn Strong five furlongs in 1:01.13. It was the New York-bred’s third work of the year and his first at five furlongs. Though Brooklyn Strong hasn’t run since winning the Grade 2 Remsen on Dec. 5, Velazquez is still hoping to run him in the Grade 2, $750,000 Wood Memorial on April 3 at Aqueduct. “From what the rider told me, he felt pretty strong,” Velazquez said. “It was his first five-eighths. I feel like now, moving forward, if I can get a five-eighths next week and a nice, big three-quarters the following week we should be really ready. If all goes well, we should be ready, without incident.” Brooklyn Strong, a son of Laoban, went 3 for 4 last year with a victory in the Sleepy Hollow Stakes versus New York-breds and a victory in the Remsen. :: KENTUCKY DERBY 2021: Derby Watch, point standings, prep schedule, news, and more An illness forced Brooklyn Strong to miss the Grade 2 Withers on Feb. 6 and some additional training time. Velazquez said he will likely point his New York-bred filly Laobanonaprayer to the $200,000 Park Avenue division of the New York Stallion Series going 6 1/2 furlongs on April 18, closing day of the Aqueduct spring meet. Laobanonaprayer, who won the Fifth Avenue division of the NYSS last December, is coming out of a fourth-place finish under Kendrick Carmouche in the Busher Invitational on March 6. “It was one of those things where the pace was just stagnant,” he said. “I think Kendrick strangled her a bit too much on the backside, didn’t really let her go, and by the time we got into the race it was over.”
