ARCADIA, Calif. – At six furlongs or a mile and one-quarter, Breeders’ Cup options remain open for Omaha Beach, whose first work since his sparkling comeback victory went smoothly Wednesday morning at Santa Anita. Omaha Beach worked by himself at 7:55, an easy half-mile under Mike Smith in 48.20 seconds. Smith and trainer Richard Mandella hoped for a mellow workout, which was not a certainty in the wake of his sizzling 1:08.79 time for six furlongs in his comeback race, the Santa Anita Sprint Championship. “For a horse that just ran in a sprint, we were worried he was going to be a little jazzed up,” Smith said. “He was real relaxed; he was even cooler and calmer [than before].” Omaha Beach galloped out five furlongs in 1:01, and Mandella was pleased. “The nice thing is you could see how kind he was,” he said. “You worry about that. But by himself he was nice and relaxed, and that’s what we wanted.” So, is the BC Sprint next for Omaha Beach? “I don’t know,” Mandella said after the work. “Maybe I’ll know [Thursday]. After what I just saw, everything’s on the board. I wouldn’t give that too much play into the Classic, but I wouldn’t say no. If one of the owners said, ‘Hey, let’s try it,’ I’d be game.” Mandella suggested not reading anything into his comments. Although the Sprint still seems more likely than the Classic, Mandella has time to prepare Omaha Beach for anything. “He’ll have a bigger work next week, and it will depend on where I’m going, whether it is short or long,” Mandella said. Moments after Omaha Beach cruised through the stretch, McKinzie followed. The early favorite for the BC Classic, he worked seven furlongs under Rafael Bejarano. He broke off at the five-furlong pole and worked through the clubhouse turn. Clockers gave him a six-furlong time of 1:12.80. “He worked very nice. He actually went seven-eighths,” trainer Bob Baffert said. “I got him in 1:25 and one; he went out a mile in [1:39.40].” Joel Rosario will ride McKinzie in the Classic. Mitole, early favorite for the BC Sprint, worked five furlongs at 6:40 a.m. He broke off at the half-mile pole and worked to the seven-furlong pole in 1:00.40. Private clocker Gary Young gave the work a thumbs up. “He was terrific,” Young said. The Baffert-trained Bast, among favorites for the BC Juvenile Fillies, also worked five furlongs at 6:40. In company with Hot Sean, Bast worked in 1:01.20. “She went well,” Baffert said. He believes Bast will move forward from her last-out 81-Beyer victory in the Grade 1 Chandelier. She covered a mile and a sixteenth in a laborious 1:46.10. Will she improve? “She’s going to need to,” Baffert said. Roadster, the Santa Anita Derby winner, smoked five furlongs in 58.60 seconds. Baffert said he runs Nov. 2 in the $100,000 Damascus Stakes. War of Will, the Preakness Stakes winner aiming to the BC Classic, worked five furlongs in 59.40 seconds. United, a longshot for the BC Turf, worked five furlongs in company in 1:01.
