Old School Icon exceeded expectations when he overcame trouble to finish second at 26-1 to stablemate Tell Cartel in the $213,300 El Primero Del Ano Derby on March 29 at Los Alamitos. Old School Icon was part of a sweep of the first three positions by owner and breeder Martha Wells and trainer Matt Fales. Saturday at Los Alamitos, Old School Icon is their lone starter in the $25,000 Dillingham Handicap for 3-year-olds at 400 yards. Old School Icon has yet to win a stakes and will have his 13th start Saturday. Last July, Old School Icon won a $16,000 claimer for maidens in his fourth career start. He was later second in two minor stakes in September and November. In the El Primero Del Ano Derby at 400 yards, Old School Icon stumbled at the start and was bumped by rivals. A gelding by Texas Icon, Old School Icon recovered to finish 1 3/4 lengths behind the impressive Tell Cartel and a half-length in front of stablemate Fire By Night. Circle City, trained by Scott Willoughby, has raced at a variety of distances. He was beaten a nose by Runforyourlife in the Golden State Million Futurity at 400 yards in November and was a troubled sixth in the Los Alamitos Winter Derby at the same distance. Circle City has had one subsequent start, finishing third by three-quarters of a length in an allowance race at 110 yards on March 21. Up And Coming, trained by Chris O’Dell, has won 6 of 10 starts and won his first stakes in the Smith Handicap, overcoming trouble midway through the race. Up and Coming won his 400-yard debut in a division of the Los Alamitos Million Futurity trials last November, but was ninth in the final after breaking through the gate before the start.
