Old Forester, the sire of 2017 Canadian Horse of the Year Pink Lloyd, died peacefully at age 23 at T.C. Westmeath Stud on Nov. 17, according to farm owner John Carey. Old Forester won the Grade 3 Cliff Hanger at The Meadowlands in 2006 and placed in several other graded stakes while earning $462,632 as a turf specialist. Old Forester entered stud in 2007 and bred 949 mares in his 17 years at stud, all at T.C. Westmeath. The handsome chestnut was an immediate hit with Ontario breeders and was Canada’s leading sire in progeny earnings five times, from 2010-12 and in 2015 and 2017. Pink Lloyd won a remarkable 26 stakes and earned $2,455,430. He was voted Canadian champion male sprinter from 2017-21 and won the Sovereign Award as champion older runner twice. Old Forester’s offspring have banked over $35 million and the son of Forestry is evolving into a successful broodmare sire.
