DEL MAR, Calif.- Kentucky Derby winner Nyquist was one of four champions to work in a little more than an hour early Sunday at Del Mar in advance of races throughout the nation in the next two weeks. Nyquist, the champion 2-year-old male of 2015, worked five furlongs in 1:02 in company with a stablemate. He will start in the $1.25 million Haskell Invitational at Monmouth Park on July 31. In other works, Songbird, the undefeated champion 2-year-old filly of 2015, worked six furlongs in 1:11.40. She is scheduled to run in the $500,000 Coaching Club American Oaks at Saratoga next Sunday. Beholder, the champion older female of 2015, and Stellar Wind, the champion 3-year-old filly of 2015, each worked seven furlongs in advance of their second meeting of the year in the $300,000 Clement Hirsch Stakes at Del Mar on July 30. Beholder was timed in 1:27 flat. Stellar Wind was timed in 1:25.20. The pair worked about an hour apart. Nyquist worked in company with a stablemate in an exercise that began with a gallop of about a half-mile from in front of the stands to the backstretch. The two picked up the tempo near the half-mile pole and worked past the finish line, with Nyquist moving to the front a quarter-mile from the wire. Dennis O’Neill, a bloodstock advisor to his brother, trainer Doug O’Neill, timed Nyquist in 1:46 for a mile, combining the gallop and workout. The Haskell will be Nyquist’s first start since a third in the Preakness Stakes at Pimlico on May 21. Nyquist has been based at Del Mar for a week and has thrived in his surroundings. “He’s adapted pretty good,” said assistant trainer Leandro Mora. “He’s the kind of horse, anywhere you put him, within a day he’s in the right spot. He’s a good shipper.” Songbird had the fastest of 19 recorded works at six furlongs. She was ridden by jockey Mike Smith, who described the effort as “incredible.” Trainer Jerry Hollendorfer said Songbird galloped out seven furlongs in “1:25 and a tick. “She went real nice and smooth,” he said. “We think she’s in top shape.” Songbird is scheduled to fly to Saratoga on Wednesday. She won the Grade 2 Summertime Oaks at Santa Anita in her most recent race. Beholder and Stellar Wind were first and second in the Grade 1 Vanity Mile at Santa Anita on June 4. They will be the dominant members of the field for the Grade 1 Clement Hirsch, which is run at 1 1/16 miles on dirt. Trainer Richard Mandella timed Beholder’s workout in 1:26. She worked in company with a stablemate, closing on the inside in the final quarter-mile to finish in front. Mandella said Beholder has maintained peak fitness since the Vanity Mile. “She doesn’t need much and she’s had her race,” he said. Stellar Wind had her first start of 2016 in the Vanity Mile. Sunday, Stellar Wind worked seven furlongs in 1:25.20, according to trainer John Sadler. He timed her galloping out a mile in 1:38.20.
