SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Trainer George Weaver is batting a gaudy .500 (11 for 22) with his 2-year-olds on turf this year, including his fruitful trip to Ascot that saw Crimson Advocate win the Group 2 Queen Mary. No Nay Mets is responsible for two of Weaver’s 10 juvenile turf wins in the U.S. and one loss abroad. No Nay Mets will look to continue his domestic success Friday at Saratoga when he heads a bulky field in the $150,000 Skidmore Stakes, which is scheduled for 5 1/2 furlongs over the Mellon turf course. No Nay Mets earned his way to Ascot by winning the Royal Palm Juvenile as a first-time starter at Gulfstream Park in May. In the Norfolk Stakes, No Nay Mets finished a disappointing ninth the day after Crimson Advocate gave Weaver his first Ascot victory. Weaver said jockey Frankie Dettori came up with a game plan for No Nay Mets that seemed to differ from what Weaver was thinking. “He had in his mind he was gonna not use the horse’s speed and ride him like we ride American horses,” Weaver said. “He felt like there was plenty of speed in the race and with the condition of the turf course he felt like he didn’t want to gas the horse out.” Unlike Crimson Advocate, who was in need of a break, No Nay Mets was ready to get back to work when he returned to the U.S. Five weeks after Ascot, No Nay Mets zipped to a 5 1/2-length victory in the 12-horse Tyro at Monmouth Park. :: DRF's 2023 Saratoga headquarters: Previews, past performances, picks, recaps, news, and more. “The field was pretty deep, a big field, it looked like had plenty of speed on paper,” Weaver said. “When you’re sprinting on the turf and you draw off it’s impressive.” Irad Ortiz Jr. will be the fourth different rider to pilot No Nay Mets, who will break from post 7 in a field that drew 12 turf runners, but will be limited to 10 starters. Ortiz had ridden Ship Cadet to a maiden victory on turf and a runner-up finish in the Tremont on dirt. Ship Cadet is coming out of a second-place finish behind No Nay Mets in the Tyro, a race in which he made a big move toward No Nay Mets at the quarter pole only to be turned aside. Manny Franco will ride Ship Cadet from post 2 in the Skidmore. Fandom was a 6 1/4-length debut winner at Keeneland in April before shipping to Ascot for the Group 2 Coventry Stakes, where, in a 20-horse field, Fandom showed good speed away from the gate but faded to 11th. John Velazquez will ride Fandom from post 9. Billy the Greek, an off-the-turf debut winner here on July 21, would be interesting from off the pace should he start. Trainer Saffie Jospeh Jr. said Wednesday he wasn’t guaranteed to run. Should Billy the Greek come out, that would put Jimmythetooth into the field. Jimmythetooth, trained by Mike Maker, is a son of World of Trouble who is coming off a win versus New York-breds here July 27. :: Visit the Saratoga Handicapping Store for Past Performances, Clocker Reports, Picks, Betting Strategies, and more. Seize the Grey, a maiden winner in the slop here for D. Wayne Lukas on July 27, is a half-brother to the turf stakes-placed runner Shoppingforpharoah. Go Otto Go, fourth in the Bashford Manor on dirt after a four-length debut win on dirt, is out of a War Chant mare. The Steve Asmussen trainee did breeze a half-mile over the Oklahoma turf course last week. Untroubled, Sebastian Run, Factor U and Me In, and Five O’ Somewhere complete the body of the turf field. El Grande O joins Jimmythetooth on the also-eligible list. Antonio of Venice is entered to run only if the race is transferred to the main track. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering? Check out DRF's Handicapping 101 and Wagering 101 pages.
