HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. - Nic’s Style continued her winning ways while becoming a graded stakes winner for the first time by getting up in the final strides to register a neck decision over R Disaster in Saturday’s Grade 2 Hurricane Bertie at Gulfstream Park.   With regular rider Junior Alvarado aboard, Nic’s Style rated in third position about 10 lengths off the rapid early pace set by Spirit Wind and prompted by her stablemate R Disaster.  Nic’s Style commenced her rally when given her cue approaching the stretch, swung out to the middle of the track to continue her bid, ultimately wearing down the tiring lead nearing the wire. R Disaster, making her stakes debut against open company, stalked the early leader, finally gained a narrow advantage a furlong from the wire, edged clear, but could not quite last. It was 3 1/2 lengths farther back to Into Champagne, with Spirit Wind finishing a tiring fourth.  Nic’s Style is owned by Stephen Rousseau and trained by Bill Mott, who welcomed the filly into his barn following the retirement of his former assistant, Ralph Nicks, with whom Nic's Style launched her career with two very one-sided victories here 19 months apart during her abbreviated 2- and 3-year-old campaigns. :: Get Gulfstream Park Clocker Reports from Mike Welsch and the Clocker Team. I took my chance knowing that she was going to be able to pick them up at the end.  Every time I asked for something she was there for me.” Silks Run Stakes     Eamonn rallied from last in the final furlong and won a nose bob from Reef Runner at the wire to upset the $115,000 Silks Run Stakes going five furlongs on the turf. It was a length farther back to third-place finisher Biz Biz Buzz.  The Silks Run lost some of its luster when Coppola, the even-money morning-line favorite, was scratched earlier in the day. Eamonn had not finished better than fourth in his previous five starts and came into the five-furlong Silks Run idle since finishing last under allowance conditions on Oct. 23 at Keeneland.  She had gone winless since capturing the Select Stakes at Monmouth in August 2023. With Edgard Zayas aboard for the first time, Eamonn settled at the rear of the six-horse field, saved ground around the turn, angled outside for the stretch run, finishing best of all down the center of the course to be along in the final strides. Reef Runner, never far back, split horses to gain control near midstretch, but could not last while never switching off his left lead down the lane. Biz Biz Buzz stumbled at the break, saved ground on the bend, rallied mildly through the final furlong but was not quite good enough. He was followed in turn by Souper Quest, the tepid 9-5 favorite, who set the pace before tiring to finish fourth, Capture the Lion and Foxtrotanna. Eamonn, a son of Pioneerof the Nile, is trained by Joe Orseno for owner Robrert Cotran. He returned $22.60 after completing the distance over a firm course in 55.58 seconds. “He’s a good fresh horse, although he was really about two works away from where I really wanted him to be,” said Orseno. “But it was coming up a short field, so we figured why not take a shot. And the way the race shaped up, with Coppola scratched, I thought he’d have a big shot.” :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering? Check out DRF's Handicapping 101 and Wagering 101 pages.
