Trainer Ralph Nicks has won stakes races at Gulfstream Park each of the last three weekends, his most recent the $100,000 Not Surprising on Saturday with Givemetwenty. Nicks on Aug. 1 sent out Breeze On By to win the $100,000 Dr. Fager division of the Florida Sire Stakes and on July 25 won an overnight stakes, the $60,000 Ana T., with Violent Times. Givemetwenty earned a career-high Beyer Speed Figure of 87 for his win in the Not Surprising. The mile turf race was for 3-year-olds, and the son of Declaration of War covered the two-turn distance in a quick 1:33.71. “Givemetwenty ran a huge race,” Nicks said Tuesday. “He just keeps improving as we go along.” Givemetwenty was making his stakes debut for his breeder and owner, Curtis C. Breeze On By remained undefeated in two starts in the Dr. Fager, a six furlong race for 2-year-olds that he won in a stretch battle in 1:10.85. Breeze On By earned a career-high Beyer of 82. “He showed some resilience the other day,” Nicks said. “Second start of his life, gets headed, gets passed a little bit in the stretch – to fight back was a huge effort. It says something for his quality.” Nicks said Breeze On By would now be pointed to the $200,000 Affirmed division of the Florida Sire Stakes over seven furlongs on Aug. 29 at Gulfstream. The son of Cajun Breeze races for his breeder, Stonehedge. Violent Times breezed a half-mile in 49.15 seconds Wednesday at Gulfstream. Nicks, who trains the mare for the Thoroughbred Acquisition Group, said she is possible for the $85,000 Smart N Fancy at Saratoga. The 5 1/2-furlong turf sprint for fillies and mares will be run Aug. 27. Groupie Doll daughter on turf Doll Collection will face winners for the first time Friday when she makes her turf debut in the seventh race at Gulfstream Park. She goes in a first-level allowance for fillies and mares at a mile, with the race offering a claiming option of $25,000. The allowance drew a field of 10. Doll Collection comes off a July 5 maiden special weight win at seven furlongs, the same distance over which her dam, champion Groupie Doll, won two runnings of the Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint. Doll Collection, who is by Tapit, is owned and bred by Whisper Hill Farm. “We’ve been wanting to try it with her,” Nicks said of turf. “Her action indicates that she might like it, and Tapits run on turf. “We won’t know until we try.” Tapit gets 14 percent winners on the grass, and Nicks wins at a 19 percent rate with his dirt-to-turf starters, according to Daily Racing Form statistics. As for the race Doll Collection exits, the fourth- and sixth-place finishers to her each has returned to win a maiden special weight race at Gulfstream. Emisael Jaramillo, who led the Gulfstream standings through Tuesday, has the mount on Doll Collection from post 8. Groupie Doll has had two foals to race, and both are winners. The chief threats to Doll Collection include Piece by Peace, who is back in the overnight ranks following a Grade 3 start at Gulfstream; Big Tina, who is out of the Grade 1-winning millionaire La Tia; and Meadow Beauty.
