LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Newspaperofrecord set the bar high for the rest of the cast at the 2018 Breeders’ Cup at Churchill Downs, cruising to an eye-popping 6 3/4-length victory over East and a dozen other overmatched rivals in Friday’s $1 million Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf. With a confident Irad Ortiz Jr. aboard, Newspaperofrecord broke alertly and quickly assumed command, rating kindly on the lead while purposefully kept well off the inner hedge. She disposed of her early pursuer, Concrete Rose, leaving the final turn and readily extended her advantage when roused through midstretch. Ortiz then took a peek behind him, and once realizing there was no competition in sight, he took Newspaperofrecord in hand, allowing her coast to the wire. East ducked out at the start after breaking from the extreme outside in the field of 14 2-year-old fillies, angled out to commence her rally on the final bend, and finished willingly down the center of the course to be second, a neck in front of Stellar Agent. Just Wonderful was fourth, followed by Varenka, The Mackam Bullet, Bella Laura, Concrete Rose, My Gal Betty, La Pelosa, Pakhet, Lily’s Candle, Summering, and Lady Prancealot. It was the third one-sided victory in as many starts for Newspaperofrecord, an Irish-bred daughter of Lope de Vega owned by Seth Klarman’s Klaravich Stable and trained by Chad Brown. She completed a mile over a yielding course in 1:39.00 and returned $3.20. Newspaperofrecord gave Brown his fourth victory in the last five renewals of the Juvenile Fillies Turf. “I felt like she broke cleanly and went into the first turn well in hand, not trying to run off, and well in control of the race,” said Brown. “Irad executed our plan perfectly. I felt, knowing something about this turf course, generally it drained from the outside in, and figured we didn’t want her to be too near the rail. By having her on the lead, it gave Irad the option of putting her where he wanted to be, allowing for us to make our own good trip.” Brown, who has had such outstanding filly turf stars as Lady Eli and Rushing Fall, called Newspaperofrecord “a remarkable talent” after the race. “I think she showed the world tuning in today how good she really is,” said Brown. “For her to win as easily as she did is remarkable. She’s got that good, front-running positional speed, and then she kicks home like a closer. What a freaky horse. “I’m pretty reserved when it comes to calling a horse a superstar and such, but I don’t think I’ve ever trained a horse who, after their first three starts, I could say we’d never let run. When she’s crossed the wire, she’s had a ridiculous amount of horse left after each of her three races.” Brown was also quick to praise his owner immediately after the race. “I can’t say enough about Seth, and this is extremely rewarding winning a Breeders’ Cup race for him,” said Brown. Brown said he has plenty of time before deciding a path for Newspaperofrecord in 2019. “Right now, we’ll concentrate on her health,” said Brown. “She’s just such a unique filly. She’s very sound, she’s got a good head on her shoulders, and she can run over any kind of surface, so this is one we might consider taking over to Europe next season.”         :: Want to get the latest news with your past performances?
