ARCADIA, Calif. – Jockey Frankie Dettori moved to Santa Anita this winter with the hope of finding a leading contender for the Kentucky Derby in the final year of his illustrious career. On Saturday at Santa Anita, Dettori won the Grade 3 Robert Lewis Stakes on Newgate, who is a candidate to reach the historic race at Churchill Downs on May 6. Newgate closed from last of four to win the Lewis Stakes at 1 1/16 miles by a neck over Hard to Figure. It was the first stakes victory for Newgate, who like the other three in the race is trained by Bob Baffert. Baffert-trained horses are barred by Churchill Downs from competing in the Kentucky Derby or earning Derby points. If Newgate is to run in the Derby, he will have to be transferred to another trainer by the end of the month. :: KENTUCKY DERBY 2023: Derby Watch, point standings, prep schedule, news, and more The Lewis was Dettori’s second stakes win of the Santa Anita meeting, which began Dec. 26. He won the Grade 2 San Antonio Stakes on Dec. 26 for Baffert on Country Grammer, a leading hope for the $20 million Saudi Cup in Saudi Arabia on Feb. 25. Through Sunday, Dettori had won 10 races at Santa Anita, good enough to rank in a tie for third place in the jockey standings behind runaway leader Juan Hernandez, who has 33 wins. For years, Dettori rode for Godolphin Racing in Dubai during the winter, when the Santa Anita winter-spring meeting is conducted. Prior to this season, Dettori, 52, had not ridden at the Santa Anita winter-spring meeting since April 2005, when he rode Wilko to a third-place finish in the Santa Anita Derby. “I wish I did this 10 years ago,” Dettori said of riding at Santa Anita. “I’m having the time of my life. I’m enjoying the riding.” Dettori was aboard Wilko for a win in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile at Lone Star Park in 2004, but did not ride Wilko when the colt finished sixth in the 2005 Kentucky Derby. Dettori has ridden the Kentucky Derby once, finishing sixth on China Visit for Godolphin in 2000. Dettori will soon make a couple of trips to the Middle East. His schedule includes a trip to the Saudi Cup, a return to California for the first half of March, and a trip to the Dubai World Cup program on March 25. :: Get ready for Santa Anita racing with DRF Past Performances, Picks, and Clocker Reports.  Dettori is likely to be back in the United States in early April for the final set of preps for the Kentucky Derby. Dettori could ride Newgate in one of those races, such as the Grade 1 Santa Anita Derby on April 8. Dettori has ridden often at Newmarket Racecourse in England on the first Saturday in May in the Group 1 English 2000 Guineas for 3-year-olds. Dettori has won the 2000 Guineas three times, most recently in 2016. At some point, Dettori will face a decision about whether to focus on the Kentucky Derby or the English 2000 Guineas this year, since the races will be held on the same day. Dettori is the regular rider of Chaldean, winner of the Group 1 Dewhurst Stakes for 2-year-olds at Newmarket last October and a leading contender for the English 2000 Guineas. There will not be another chance for Dettori to win a Kentucky Derby. Dettori plans to retire this fall. “This horse is nice,” Dettori said of Newgate. “There’s plenty of things to unfold from now until the Derby.” :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
