It was a textbook ride, as he saved ground on the turn behind the leaders before sweeping to the front on the outside en route to a daylight score. On Sunday, Gallardo guided the co-favored Avoman to a workmanlike win in the $150,000 Plate Trial Stakes, a prep for the $1 million Queen’s Plate here Aug. 22. :: Bet the races with confidence on DRF Bets. He has a full slate of mounts at the Erie, Pa., track next week. Heading into this week, Gallardo had won on five of his 33 rides here after having joined the jockey colony on a full-time basis just a few weeks ago. He ranks 15th in the standings, and could make his way into the top 10 by the fall. “I like it here,” Gallardo said. “People have been really nice with me. The track is beautiful.” Gallardo is named on four horses here Sunday on a challenging 10-race card without a stakes. The feature is a first-level allowance on the Tapeta, with no shortage of speed among the nine entrants. Lenny K should be among the favorites in the six-furlong sprint. Trained by Kevin Attard for owners Al and Bill Ulwelling, Lenny K came up short after contesting the pace in three straight maiden special weight sprints heading into his last race July 8, when rating tactics were employed. Lenny K mounted an eye-catching four-wide rally from sixth to win going away, and the runner-up came right back to win another maiden special. Lenny K is meeting older opposition for the first time on Sunday. The pair of 79 Beyer Speed Figures he earned in his last two races are in the ballpark of the Beyer par of 82 for Sunday’s race. Trainer Robert Tiller entered the front-runners Aim for the Sky and Checkerboard Floor. Aim for the Sky is drawn towards the inside and seems poised for a peak performance in his third start off the bench. Checkerboard Floor is going from turf to Tapeta, a pretty good angle for Tiller. Sandy Bay was a close second in both his final 2020 outing and in his 2021 opener at the first allowance condition. Al Heybay, a $50,000 claim at Gulfstream, was a prominent second with an 84 Beyer in an allowance for 3-year-olds in his second local appearance.
