ETOBICOKE, Ontario – A supplemented runner rarely goes off favored in a stakes at Woodbine, but that should be the case with the unbeaten shipper New York Thunder in Sunday’s $125,000 Woodstock, a six-furlong sprint for 3-year-olds. New York Thunder made both of his starts at Gulfstream for trainer Jorge Delgado. The son of Nyquist aired on the front in his Nov. 27 debut in a five-furlong maiden special on Tapeta, scoring by 6 1/2 lengths with a 93 Beyer Speed Figure, easily the highest speed figure in the Woodstock field. New York Thunder doubled up in a five-furlong allowance on the turf Dec. 30, when he put away the other speed before winning by 1 3/4 lengths with an 83 Beyer. Ricardo Santana Jr. has been booked to ride New York Thunder, who is adding Lasix. Delgado has a 30 percent strike rate with 61- to 180-day layoff runners, and his first-Lasix numbers also are sterling. Opposites Attract is the other supplement in the six-horse lineup. Based in Maryland, Opposites Attract’s lone victory came in a maiden special weight turf sprint at Colonial. The Ontario-bred got the winter off after ending up fifth here in the Cup and Saucer Stakes on Oct. 9 and has been working on the Tapeta at the Fair Hill Training Center in advance of this engagement. Justin Stein will ride him for trainer Mike Trombetta. Trainer Mark Casse entered Stayhonor Goodside, Gran Spirited and Ninetyfour Expos. :: Bet the races on DRF Bets! Stayhonor Goodside left Gran Spirited behind him in sixth when he wound up second in the Cup and Saucer, which was the highlight of his six-race juvenile campaign. Ninetyfour Expos, like Stayhonor Goodside, is listed as a first-time gelding. Named after the league-leading 1994 Montreal Expos baseball team, Ninetyfour Expos graduated with authority second time out in a Tapeta sprint last May before ending up fifth in the Soaring Free Stakes and fourth in the Grade 1 Summer. His quick works here on the Tapeta this spring point him out as the one to fear most among the Casse trio. Emma-Jayne Wilson was named on both Ninetyfour Expos and Stayhonor Goodside. Declan Carroll has the mount on Gran Spirited. All three are nominated to the Canadian Triple Crown. Rounding out the field is Florida invader Ship the Goods. Trained by Christophe Clement, he won his Dec. 3 opener on the dirt at Tampa before clearing the first allowance condition in his second try on the turf March 10 at Gulfstream. Crispy Cat exited the latter event to land a stakes at Laurel. Kazushi Kimura will ride Ship the Goods, who is by the good 17 percent synthetic sprint sire Munnings. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
