In a decision that was expected, Nest, the champion 3-year-old filly of 2022, will not be pre-entered Monday for the Breeders’ Cup Distaff on Nov. 4 at Santa Anita, but it is not certain that she will be retired, trainer Todd Pletcher said Saturday. Nest, owned by a partnership that includes Mike Repole, Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners, and Michael House, will be offered at auction at Fasig-Tipton November, known as the “Night of the Stars” sale on Nov. 7. “I’m not sure if Mike might buy the other 50 percent and run her back, I’m not sure what they’re going to do,” Pletcher said. “She’s far from definitely being retired.” :: BREEDERS’ CUP 2023: See DRF’s special section with top contenders, odds, comments, news, and more for each division Nest, a 4-year-old daughter of Curlin, finished a disappointing fourth in the Grade 1 Spinster on Oct. 8 and she hasn’t trained the way Pletcher would like to attempt a spot like the Distaff. “She seems fine, she’s been galloping every day at Keeneland we just haven’t seen the same energy we saw before,” Pletcher said. “It’s 27 days back to the Distaff… similar to what we saw with Forte. We’re kind of running out of time to be at our peak for a race that you have to obviously be at your very best for.” Forte, who Pletcher trained to a championship in 2022 for a partnership that included Repole, was officially retired from racing on Thursday after he couldn’t overcome a foot issue in time to make it to the Classic. Nest, a daughter of Curlin, won 8 of 14 starts and earned $2.17 million in her career. At 2, she won the Grade 2 Demoiselle. Her trio of Grade 1 victories at 3 included the Ashland at Keeneland, and the Coaching Club American Oaks and Alabama at Saratoga. Nest also finished second to stablemate Mo Donegal in the Belmont Stakes. “She’s a filly that is a generational talent,” Pletcher said. “I’ll always think of her Coaching Club and Alabama as being incredible performances where she literally blew the field away. You also think about finishing second in the Belmont Stakes, that was an incredible performance as well.” Nest’s 4-year-old campaign was delayed due to illness in the spring. At Saratoga, she came off an eight-month layoff to win Grade 2 Shuvee on July 23. She then finished third in the Grade 1 Personal Ensign and fourth in the Spinster. “It’s disappointing, we obviously had super-high hopes coming into the year with a Curlin filly that was incredibly successful at 3 and would only get better at 4,” Pletcher said. Annapolis, Be You to pass on Breeders; Cup Pletcher also said that neither Annapolis (Mile) nor Be You (Juvenile) would be pre-entered for Breeders’ Cup races. Annapolis, fourth in the Coolmore Turf Mile last out, will be aimed at the Pegasus World Cup Turf on Jan. 27 at Gulfstream Park with a possible start before then. Be You, third in the Grade 1 American Pharoah at Santa Anita, is still eligible for a maiden race. Pletcher did say that Fierceness, seventh as the favorite in the Champagne, would be pre-entered in the Juvenile along with his Breeders’ Futurity winner Locked. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
