The two most recent winners of the Preakness Stakes have officially been retired and have taken up residence at their stallion homes. Spendthrift Farm said this week that 2023 Preakness winner National Treasure, who also won this year’s Pegasus World Cup and Metropolitan Handicap, has officially been retired and is available for inspection by appointment. National Treasure was withdrawn from consideration for the Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile the week before the race with a foot issue, and at the time, his connections were still deciding if he would run again. Spendthrift announced early this year that it had acquired his breeding rights. National Treasure, who will stand for $40,000, is one of two classic winners new to Spendthrift for 2025, along with 2024 Belmont winner Dornoch. The farm also debuts Grade 1 winner Kingsbarns. On Thursday, 2024 Preakness winner Seize the Grey, eighth in the Dirt Mile in what proved his career finale, arrived at Gainesway Farm. The Arrogate colt, who will debut for $30,000, also won the Pennsylvania Derby this year. He is one of four newcomers to Gainesway, along with Grade 1 winners Muth and Tapit Trice and graded winner Charge It. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
