HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – Kentucky Derby winner Mystik Dan and Horse of the Year favorite Thorpedo Anna arrived at Gulfstream Park on Sunday and were out on the track for routine jogs on Monday. Mystik Dan, who won a nose decision over 3-year-old male Eclipse Award finalist Sierra Leone in the Derby and was second in the Preakness, returned from a near seven-month hiatus to finish a disappointing sixth and last in the Grade 1 Malibu at Santa Anita to close out his 3-year-old campaign Dec. 26. Trainer Kenny McPeek said he plans to wheel him right back going a more suitable distance, 1 1/8 miles, in the $3 million Pegasus World Cup Invitational on Jan. 25. “I wasn’t totally surprised by his performance in the Malibu,” McPeek said. “Any time you’re turning a horse back like that after running long so many times it’s really tricky, and in hindsight I question whether I did enough with him. Maybe he just wasn’t ready. But he seems to be very sound out of the race and just wants to go two turns. The race should benefit him going to the Pegasus, so we’ll regroup and try him there.” McPeek said he will map out a local work schedule for Mystik Dan leading up to the Pegasus over the next couple of days. He has a second invitee to the race in Rattle N Roll, a four-time graded stakes winner in 2024, including a victory in the Grade 2 Clark on Nov. 29. But McPeek said Rattle N Roll will bypass the Pegasus and head to the Middle East, where his main goal is the $20 million Saudi Cup in Riyadh on Feb. 22. McPeek said Rattle N Roll, who was recently purchased privately by Sheikh Mohammed S. al-Hariri, will be accompanied on the trip by another member of his stable, Generous Tipper, winner of the Discovery at Aqueduct in his 3-year-old finale. :: Get Gulfstream Park Clocker Reports from Mike Welsch and the Clocker Team. Available every race day.  As for Thorpedo Anna, who jogged two miles here Monday, she is recuperating from minor surgery to “remove a small piece from the top of her mouth” according to McPeek. He said she will need three to four weeks of galloping before returning to the work tab this winter. “If she’s training that forwardly, we might consider the Dubai World Cup for her first start back,” said McPeek. “If not, it will likely be the Apple Blossom.” Other Pegasus invitees whose starting status was confirmed Monday are the Todd Pletcher-trained duo of Cigar Mile winner Locked and Crupi, third in the event a year ago, along with trainer Saffie Joseph Jr.’s pair of 2023 Breeders’ Cup Classic winner White Abarrio and Skippylongstocking. Trainer Doug O’Neill said he will run Pacific Classic winner Mixto but bypass the event with his second invitee, J B Strikes Back. Senor Buscador, runner-up in the 2024 Pegasus, will be back again while trainer Phil D’Amato said Monday he is also leaning toward shipping Malibu runner-up Stronghold east for the Pegasus. “He bounced out of the Malibu like it was a workout, which I like to see with a horse who I’m thinking of running on a short turnaround,” said D’Amato. “We’ll see how he does in his next two works, but at the moment we’re pointing for the race.” Trainers Brad Cox and Bob Baffert both said Monday they still have the Pegasus under consideration for their invitees. Cox has Grade 1 winner Saudi Crown and Baffert has Imagination, who finished third in the Malibu, a half-length behind Stronghold. Pletcher said both his Pegasus hopefuls are doing well coming into the race. Locked and Crupi breezed in company last Friday at Palm Beach Downs, going five furlongs in 1:03.11 with Locked nearest the rail traveling easiest of the duo. Both galloped out with good energy into and around the turn. “Crupi is a useful work horse but not the bullet type,” Pletcher explained. “He’ll obviously benefit from a strong pace, as he did last year, and he’s shown from that race and his efforts in the Suburban and Whitney that he’s certainly capable of getting a piece of it again. And if things were to unfold just right, maybe winning the whole thing.” Locked brings a two-race win streak into the Pegasus that includes a 1 1/2-length triumph in the Grade 2 Cigar Mile. “Locked showed a lot of talent in his last two races and we think he’s been looking for more distance all along,” Pletcher said. “He’s really developed physically from 3 to 4 and we’re very excited about his 4-year-old campaign.” A second, revised, invitation list for all three Pegasus World Cup races will be released on Wednesday. Laurice one to beat Wednesday’s main event is a $96,000 allowance and optional claimer for 3-year-old fillies going five furlongs on the Tapeta. As one would expect, the eight-horse field is loaded with speed. The race is topped by Laurice, who finished fifth in the Grade 3 Matron over the Aqueduct turf in her juvenile finale. Trained by George Weaver, Laurice will be equipped with blinkers for the first time and be reunited with Junior Alvarado, who rode her to victory in her career debut. :: Play Gulfstream Park with confidence! Sano has 1,000th winner Trainer Antonio Sano won his 1,000th race in North America when he sent out Big Boy Jak to capture Sunday’s seventh race. The milestone came a day after Sano celebrated his 62nd birthday. Sano won over 3,000 races in his native Venezuela before coming to the U.S. in April 2010. His most notable runners in this country have been the $5.5 million earner Gunnevera, Simplification, and Il Miracolo, winner of the Grade 3 Ghostzapper here last winter. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
