Tejano Twist is at his best with a quick pace to run down, and it’s difficult to assess whether he will get a favorable scenario in Friday’s ninth race at Oaklawn Park. The $1.4 million earner is part of a field of 10 for a conditioned allowance at six furlongs that includes fellow Grade 3 winner Ryvit, as well as stakes winners Run Classic, Our Last Chance, Edge to Edge, and Kavod. Raise Cain and Osborne both are entered back in a one-mile allowance Saturday at Oaklawn. Ryvit could be prominent, as could Edge to Edge, with both horses making their first starts since June. From there, it’s a difficult read because some horses are shortening in distance. “I don’t know that there’s that much speed in the race,” said Chris Hartman, who trains Tejano Twist. “But Edge to Edge, my other horse in there, should be on the point, I would think. He’s a speedster and he’s fresh, too.” :: Bet the races with a $200 First Deposit Match + FREE All Access PPs! Join DRF Bets. Tejano Twist has recency on both Edge to Edge and Ryvit. He is coming off a runner-up finish as the favorite in an allowance Dec. 1 at Churchill Downs. Tejano Twist was edged by three-quarters of a length by Disco Ball, who set the pace that day and won his fifth straight race. The final time for the six furlongs was a quick 1:08.28, and Tejano Twist earned a Beyer Speed Figure of 90. “He ran a really good race and just couldn’t run a horse down,” Hartman said. “He put his effort in. He just couldn’t get there.” Tejano Twist is a five-time stakes winner and last season at Oaklawn won the Ring the Bell and was second in the King Cotton, Grade 3 Whitmore, and Grade 3 Count Fleet. The allowance Friday could set him up for a return to stakes competition. The King Cotton on Jan. 25 is next on the local calendar. “Hopefully, we’ll get rolling with the rest of the stakes program when it starts kicking back in,” Hartman said. Rafael Bejarano has the mount from post 7. Edge to Edge will start from post 9 under apprentice Tyler Bacon. He is moving back to dirt and also returning to Oaklawn, where last season he won the Eclipse, an overnight handicap, with a Beyer of 101. Ryvit is a three-time stakes winner who last season at Oaklawn won an allowance with a Beyer of 99 and finished third in the Whitmore. He’s a horse that’s had a good deal of success on the front end, but he’s also been effective from off the pace. Keith James Asmussen has the mount from post 4 for trainer Steve Asmussen. Kavod is shortening up slightly from a win over 6 1/2 furlongs in a second-level allowance at Churchill. One start prior, he was second at the same level and distance to Giant Mischief, who returned to take the Fall Highweight at Aqueduct. Cristian Torres has the mount from post 5 for trainer Joe Sharp. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering? Check out DRF's Handicapping 101 and Wagering 101 pages.
