DEL MAR, Calif. - The 4-year-old filly Mrs. Astor had a fine day out in Sunday’s Grade 3 Red Carpet Stakes for fillies and mares at Del Mar, recording her first stakes win. The same could not be said of race favorite Forever After All, who had a rough trip. Mrs. Astor ($11.60) won the $101,000 Red Carpet Stakes by a length over 7-10 Forever After All, who was checked sharply with slightly more than three furlongs remaining and recovered to finish second under jockey Juan Hernandez. “I lost the race over there,” Hernandez said in reference to the end of the backstretch. “There was no room and she jumped back. “She came back, but it was a little late.” :: Bet with the Best! The incident with Forever After All involved eventual third-place finisher Marksman Queen, who appeared to drift toward the inside approaching the turn, leaving Forever After All briefly in tight quarters. Mrs. Astor, ridden by Vincent Chaminaud for trainer Jonathan Thomas, avoided the trouble. Mrs. Astor was positioned to the outside of Forever After All at the end of the backstretch and had a trouble-free trip. Mrs. Astor took the lead on the turn and ran 1 3/8 miles on turf in 2:16.82 on firm turf and earned a career-best Beyer Speed Figure of 90. “I was lucky,” said Cheminaud, who won his first stakes at Del Mar on Sunday. “I had a good trip. She likes the firm turf.” Marksman Queen (7-2) was followed in the order of finish by Mahina, Ima Joker and Moment’s Pleasure. Everything Bugs Me, who set a moderate pace of 24.85 seconds for the opening quarter-mile and 49.47 for a half-mile, was pulled up on the turn and was walked off the track. Everything Bugs Me was taken well off the inside of the track by jockey Mike Smith at the end of the backstretch when she began to fade from contention. Mrs. Astor, who is owned and bred by George Strawbridge Jr.’s Augustin Stable, has won 3 of 15 starts and earned $285,235. The Red Carpet Stakes was Mrs. Astor’s third start in a Grade 3 race. She was third in the Grade 3 Regret Stakes at Churchill Downs in June 2023 and fourth at 52-1 in the Grade 3 Dowager Stakes at 1 1/2 miles at Keeneland on Oct. 20. Mrs. Astor won an allowance race at 1 1/16 miles at Colonial Downs in Virginia in September. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
