Mr Jess Jenkins came barreling down the center of the track to catch favorite Mister Riptide and win the Grade 1, $3 million All American Futurity by a neck on Monday at Ruidoso Downs in New Mexico. It was another nose back to Determined One in third. The All American is the richest race on offer for Quarter Horses and it closed out the meet. Other highlights on the card included a win by Uncle D in the $200,000 All American Juvenile, the consolation for the All American. There were a total of four stakes on the 12-race program held under sunny skies. Mr Jess Jenkins ($28.60), an Oklahoma-bred who started his career at Remington Park, has come to hand at the most opportune time. He won his maiden in his trial for the All American at Ruidoso, cruising by 1 1/2-lengths in what was his fourth career start Aug. 16. Mr Jess Jenkins returned for the finale Monday and broke sharply and chased fastest qualifier Mister Riptide and second choice Determined One as they battled up front and along the inside. Mr Jess Jenkins caught those two nearing the wire to win in a photo finish. He covered 440 yards on a fast track in 21.30 seconds. James A. Flores was aboard Mr Jess Jenkins for trainer Marcos Carrizales. Mr Jess Jenkins is a gelding by Apollitical Jess who races for Jose E. Guzman and Rito Sosa. For the win the horse earned $1.5 million. Mr Jess Jenkins was bred by V.H. Harman Jr. and Robert Moody, III. The start of the All American was delayed when Df Mischievious Jess acted up in the starting gate just as the field was loaded. He came through the front with an assistant starter in control of the horse, and the remainder of the field was backed out of the gate. Df Mischievious Jess and others were examined, the field was reloaded, and the race was off with Df Mischievious Jess finishing 10th after being bumped. Mr Jess Jenkins is now 2 for 2 at the classic distance of 440 yards as his first start at the trip came in trials for the All American. Lil Miss Sashay finished fourth on Monday, a length and half behind Determined One. The remaining order of finish was My Fast Prize in fifth, Gonna B Famous, Passionate Paris, Avyator, Elm Creek Khrome and Df Mischievious Jess. In other stakes action, Uncle D ($4.40) was a neck winner of the All American Juvenile, covering 440 yards in 21.39 seconds. Earlier in the meet, the horse won the Grade 1, $1 million Rainbow Futurity. ► Shame On Powers ($10.60) was a nose winner of the $143,091 Rio Grande Thoroughbred Futurity for trainer Cliff Lambert, the retired jockey who won the inaugural All American Futurity aboard Galobar in 1959. ► Kram won the $30,000 Governor’s Handicap, covering 7 1/2 furlongs around two turns in 1:33.18. She is a daughter of Colonel John. Her older half-brother, Net Gain, was to start as the probable favorite in Monday’s night’s $100,000 Governor Terry E. Branstad at Prairie Meadows. Both horses are out of the mare Triple o’ Five.
