HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. - Movin’ On Up parlayed a perfect ground-saving trip into the first stakes victory of her career with a convincing three-length decision over Five Towns in Saturday’s $165,000 Sand Springs for older fillies and mares on the turf at Gulfstream Park.  Movin’ On Up gave leading trainer Saffie Joseph Jr. his third stakes win on the card.  Movin’ On Up has improved steadily since she was claimed by Joseph for owner Ken Ramsey out of her maiden win for $35,000 here over the Tapeta track in her 2-year-old finale in December 2023. She has since won four of seven  starts, including a high-priced optional claiming and allowance race to launch her 2025 campaign here just two weeks ago. With Edgard Zayas aboard, Movin’ On Up sat within easy striking distance of the leaders while saving ground for the opening seven furlongs of the 1 1/16-mile Sand Springs. A daughter of Accelerate, Movin’ On Up found ample room inside the leaders when set down to launch her bid upon settling into the stretch, increasing her advantage steadily once striking the lead a furlong from the wire. Five Towns rallied mildly down the center of the track to prove second-best, finishing three quarters of a length in front of Breath Away, while not threatening the winner in the end.  In Our Time weakened steadily down the lane to finish a tiring sixth as the 5-2 favorite. :: Get Gulfstream Park Clocker Reports from Mike Welsch and the Clocker Team. Movin’ On Up completed the distance over a firm course in 1:38.01 seconds and returned $8.20. “We brought her back quick because Mr. Ramsey was trying to get another winner for the (owners) title,” Joseph said. “He didn’t need it, but she won impressively, especially for coming back in two weeks. Perfect trip, perfect ride. She’ll get a little break now.” Spirited Boss, making her first start outside the Florida-bred division and first on turf, continued her winning ways when rallying to a half-length victory over Candy Quest in the $165,000 Sanibel Island Stakes for 3-year-old fillies. It was a similar margin back to third-place finisher Civetta. Spirited Boss came into the 7 1/2-furlong Sanibel Island having won her last two starts by a combined 9 1/4 lengths. Starting with a maiden special weight dash going 5 1/2 furlongs  on January 15, followed by a 1 1/16-mile entry-level test five weeks later. Both races were on the Tapeta track.   Spirited Boss, a Florida-bred daughter of Street Boss, was ridden in each of her first three outings by Irad Ortiz Jr., who opted instead to take the call on Civetta for trainer Brendan Walsh in the Sanibel Island. He was originally replaced aboard Spirited Boss by Junior Alvarado, with Javier Castellano ultimately picking up the mount after Alvarado was sidelined due to a shoulder injury suffered in a riding mishap here last weekend. Spirited Boss was rated just off the early leaders while kept outside horses in the run down the backstretch, moved three wide to wrest control near the quarter pole, shook off bids from Classic Q and Civetta through midstretch before withstanding a final rally from Candy Quest. The latter finished best of all down the center of the course and was gaining steadily on the winner at the end.  Love Cervere, the tepid 5-2 favorite, finished fifth after racing forwardly into the stretch. Spirited Boss, a Tag Stables homebred, paid $26.40. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering? Check out DRF's Handicapping 101 and Wagering 101 pages.
