Mouffy has been disqualified from her first-place finish in the $150,000 Perfect Sting Stakes on July 4 at Aqueduct after testing positive for the Class C medication Dexamethasone, according to a resolution of the issue posted on the Horseracing Integrity and Welfare Unit website. In addition to having to forfeit the $82,500 first-place purse, Mouffy is now unplaced in the order of finish. Trainer Jonathan Thomas was fined $500 and is assigned 1 1/2 penalty points on a system that could lead to further sanctions should Thomas sustain any more violations within two years. It is Thomas’s first violation under the HIWU regulations. Thomas said the horse was not knowingly treated with Dexamethasone but, working with the veterinary group that treated Mouffy to determine what happened, came to the conclusion Mouffy was given the medication due to a mislabeling issue. Thomas declined to identify the veterinary group. Mouffy shipped to New York from out of town and Thomas said initially he was concerned that perhaps there was a contamination situation from the various stalls and vans she had been in. “We later became aware that the electrolytes that had been dispensed and prescribed by our veterinary group had been mislabeled and a few were in fact Dexamethasone,” Thomas said in a written statement. “After an 18-hour van ride the mare was given in good faith what we believed to be electrolytes. When the B sample confirmed the initial test and the dispensed tubes had been inspected and confirmed by the vet group to have been mislabeled, we informed HISA of our findings and accepted the ruling. :: Subscribe to the DRF Post Time Email Newsletter: Get the news you need to play today's races!  “We realize that accidents happen and this was a very unfortunate incident for all involved,” Thomas continued. “We have added layers of protection to insure this will not happen again and as always, put the care and well being of our horses first and foremost.” The disqualification of Mouffy moves Midnight Mile to first in the Perfect Sting. Midnight Mile, an Irish-bred daughter of No Nay Never, is trained by Chad Brown for Susan Magnier and Roisin Henry. Since the Perfect Sting, Mouffy, a 5-year-old daughter of Uncle Mo owned and bred by George Strawbridge, has run four times, winning the Grade 2 Dance Smartly at Woodbine in October. Most recently, Mouffy finished seventh in the Grade 1 Matriarch at Del Mar. She is entered to run in the Grade 3, $100,000 Robert Frankel Stakes at Santa Anita on Dec. 27. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
