Trainer Tom Morley has a couple of fast 3-year-olds that he wants to run at six furlongs, which is why he will likely have look out of town for next starts for One Nine Hundred and Paula’s a Star. One Nine Hundred, a seven-length maiden winner on March 29 at Aqueduct, will likely be pointed to the $150,000 Chick Lang Stakes at Laurel Park on May 17. Paula’s a Star, third against males in the Jimmy Winkfield Stakes at Aqueduct, will be aimed at the Grade 3, $150,000 Miss Preakness Stakes on May 16. One Nine Hundred has run three very good maiden races. In January, he was beaten a head by T Kraft in a race where he didn’t break sharp. On Feb. 7, One Nine Hundred was beaten seven lengths by Colloquial in a race where the winner earned a 106 Beyer Speed Figure and One Nine Hundred got a 92. :: Access the most trusted data and information in horse racing! In his maiden win on March 29, One Nine Hundred won by seven lengths, equaling that 92 Beyer. “He came out of it great and the Ragozin number was terrifyingly fast,” said Morley, adding that the figure came back a 6, which indicates a fast race. “On Arkansas Derby and Florida Derby day, it was the fastest number given to a 3-year-old in the country. He is that fast.” One Nine Hundred was ready to run last year, Morley said before he developed a hairline crack in a hind leg. No surgery was required, just time. “He’s definitely getting stronger and stronger, he’s got a lovely mind,” Morley said. “We do feel six furlongs is going to be his best distance. Maybe we’ll try later in the year to stretch him out a little farther, certainly he didn’t seem to be stopping the other day when he got to the wire.” Morley said he was happy with how Paula’s a Star has done out of the Winkfield and will decide whether to train up to the Miss Preakness or try to get a race into her beforehand. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
