Monarchos, the 2001 Kentucky Derby winner now standing at stud, has resumed breeding duties after recovering from colic surgery.A 13-year-old Maria’s Mon horse, Monarchos underwent surgery on April 19 to correct a twisted bowel. “Monarchos’s recovery went well, and we have started booking mares for the remainder of the breeding season,” said Charles Nuckols III of Nuckols Farm, In Midway, Ky., which stands the horse for a $6,000 advertised fee this year.Owned by John Oxley and bred by Jim Squires, Monarchos won the 2001 Kentucky Derby in the race’s second-fastest time, 1:59.97.In addition to siring Informed Decision, he also has sired graded winner Win Willy and 10 other black-type winners. His progeny earnings stand at more than $12.8 million.
