HOT SPRINGS, Ark. – Mocito Rojo will be charting some new territory Saturday when he makes his Oaklawn Park debut in the second division of the $100,000 Fifth Season Stakes. Last year, the horse handled myriad racing surfaces, winning five consecutive stakes on five different tracks. For the Fifth Season, he’s invading from Delta Downs. “We’ll see how he likes the racetrack,” said trainer Shane Wilson. “I think it’s a lot like Delta Downs. It’s been years since I’ve been to Oaklawn, but whenever I was there it was a sandy, deep track, just like Delta’s racetrack.” The Fifth Season was split into two eight-horse divisions when entries were drawn and they share a card with the $100,000 Pippin. The Fifth Season and Pippin, which both are at a mile and end at the sixteenth pole, are the initial stepping-stones to the Oaklawn Handicap and Apple Blossom Handicap. Those races are now each worth $1 million. Wilson said the local stakes program is one of the reasons Mocito Rojo is venturing to Oaklawn, as he and owner Wayne T. Davis want to see how the horse handles the surface. Mocito Rojo is one of four graded winners in his division – along with Bravazo, Colonelsdarktemper, and Rated R Superstar. Mocito Rojo became a two-time graded winner during his streak, taking the Grade 3 Steve Sexton Mile in April at Lone Star Park and the Grade 3 Lukas Classic over 1 1/8 miles in September at Churchill Downs. Mocito Rojo has earned $804,000, and Wilson said he’d like to get him over $1 million and give him a chance at stud. Mocito Rojo’s win streak stretched from March to September. He’s since run seventh in both the Grade 2 Fayette at Keeneland – on a sloppy track Wilson felt he did not handle – and the Grade 1 Clark on Nov. 29 at Churchill. He will break from post 2 under regular rider Filemon Rodriguez. “If there’s pace in front of him, he can sit back,” Wilson said. “If nobody wants the lead, he can be on the pace.” The chief threat could be Pioneer Spirit, who won the Tenacious at Fair Grounds in his last start on Dec. 21. Before that he won an optional $150,000 claiming race at Churchill with a Beyer Speed Figure of 105. He has since been breezing at Oaklawn. “He’s had some really good works over the track,” said trainer Robertino Diodoro. “He ran well at the Fair Grounds for us and we’re looking for some big things on opening weekend.” Orlando Mojica has the mount from post 6. “He’ll run on the lead or stalk,” Diodoro said. “He can do either. It all depends on who’s in the race.” Bravazo, an earner of $2 million, makes his second start off a layoff. Snapper Sinclair, who is a millionaire, heads the first division of the Fifth Season. “He’s an excellent miler, and he likes Oaklawn,” said trainer Steve Asmussen. Snapper Sinclair has won mile races around one turn and two, and on dirt and turf. In November, he ran fourth in the Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile at Santa Anita. Ricardo Santana Jr. has the mount from post 3 for Bloom Racing Stable. The field also includes Grade 3 winner Remembering Rita, Canadian champion Sky Promise, and past Fifth Season winner Sonneteer. Night Ops, another starter, defeated Pirate’s Punch last out in a Churchill allowance. Last week, Pirate’s Punch came back and won a Fair Grounds allowance with a Beyer of 102. The Pippin brings together a field of 11 fillies and mares including Lady Suebee, who exits a third-place finish in last month’s Grade 3 Bayakoa at Los Alamitos. Trained by John Sadler, won the one-mile Tranquility Lake at Del Mar. Tyler Baze has the mount from post 2 for Hronis Racing. Whoa Nellie makes her stakes debut after picking up her fourth win from eight career starts in a mile allowance last month at Turfway. She’s making her second appearance at Oaklawn, having run seventh as the favorite here last April. “We’re hoping to draw a line through her last race here,” said trainer Larry Jones. “Maybe I didn’t have her as ready as I thought. It was the second start of her life and she’d been laid off. Maybe I didn’t have her tight enough. She’s been pretty effective ever since.” Joe Rocco Jr. has the mount for Fox Hill Farm. ◗ There are 50-cent corned beef sandwiches and 10-cent sodas ontrack Saturday.
