The future of the New York breeding program looks as bright as ever with 2-year-olds like Mo Plex and With the Angels coming up the ranks. Both will see action Sunday on Empire Showcase Day at the Belmont meet at Aqueduct. Mo Plex will be seeking the third stakes win of his young career in the $200,000 Sleepy Hollow, while With the Angels is looking to run her record to 3 for 3 in the $200,000 Maid of the Mist for fillies. Both races are one-turn miles. The Sleepy Hollow field of six includes Sacrosanct, a 12-length winner of the Bertram Bongard last out at Aqueduct, and Soontobeking, who is coming off a runner-up finish in the key-race Aspirant at Finger Lakes. Mo Plex won the Grade 3 Sanford and Funny Cide in his two starts this summer at Saratoga. He enters the Sleepy Hollow off a third-place finish in the Grade 1 Champagne. “He’s been a very nice horse this year and obviously we’re kind of excited about him and his future,” said trainer Jeremiah Englehart. “Since day one he’s really enjoyed training, loves to go to work, and is a pretty intelligent horse at that, too.” Mo Plex closed well in the Champagne, run at the same distance he will travel Sunday. The winner of the race, Chancer McPatrick, is a top contender in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile. :: Bet with the Best! Irad Ortiz Jr. has the mount from the rail for R and H Stable. Maid of the Mist With the Angels, who is part of a field of eight, has won the first two races of her career by a combined 21 1/4 lengths. She became a stakes winner in her most recent out, taking the Joseph A. Gimma over seven furlongs Sept. 22 at Aqueduct. “We’ve been happy with her progress,” said trainer Linda Rice. “She’s run two terrific races for us and we’re hoping she continues on Sunday.” With the Angels has wired her rivals in each of her starts, breaking on top each time. She will start from post 3 on Sunday, under Jose Ortiz. “She has a lot of natural speed,” Rice said. “I would expect that she’s going to be close, if not on the lead again, going a mile, as the distances go farther.” Others set to start include Another Cleeshay, who is coming off a fourth-place finish in the Grade 1 Frizette that has produced two pre-entrants for the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies, and Boston’s Phinest, a half-sister to stakes winner Libban. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
