PHOENIX - Southern California raider Miss McCall never had an anxious moment as the 3-year-old filly dominated Saturday's $50,000 City of Phoenix Handicap at Turf Paradise. Owned by Scott Anastasi, Jimmy Ukegawa and Mike Mitchell, and trained by Mitchell, Miss McCall bounced out of the gate to a clear early lead in the six-furlong event for fillies and mares and extended her margin. She was five lengths clear in midstretch and was then geared down by jockey Glenn Corbett to win easily by 4 3/4 lengths. Profitability rallied from well back to be second, 4 1/2 lengths ahead of third-place Blumin Beauty in the field of nine. Shesa Private I, the defending champ, chased the winner early but weakened and finished sixth. A daughter of Lightnin N Thunder, Miss McCall covered the six furlongs in 1:08.64 and paid $3 as the heavy favorite. The winner's share of $30,000 pushes her career bankroll to $99,400 from 3 wins in 4 starts. After losing her debut on turf at Hollywood Park May 25 she was gone for five months and has not lost since coming back.
