Miracle will have a few new variables in her favor Sunday when she attempts to nail down her first stakes win in the $200,000 Maid of the Mist at Aqueduct. The one-mile race for 2-year-old fillies is one of eight stakes, all for New York-breds, on the New York Showcase card. Miracle is part of a competitive field of 10 led by Gambling Girl, who won the local Joseph A. Gimma on Sept. 23. Miracle finished second by 1 3/4 lengths in the race, which was run over seven furlongs. She will add blinkers Sunday. “I feel like the added distance and having the blinkers to keep her focused could be the key,” said Rodolphe Brisset, who trains Miracle for WinStar Farm and Sienna Farm. :: Get access to Breeders' Cup Clocker Reports with our special VIP Package and save off the retail price. Miracle, who was a $360,000 purchase at the OBS auction of 2-year-olds in March, is a daughter of Mendelssohn and from the female family of two-time Horse of the Year Curlin. Miracle won her career debut by six lengths in July at Saratoga, then came back and finished third in the track’s Seeking the Ante Stakes before her effort in the Gimma. Flavien Prat, who was aboard for the Gimma, again has the mount from post 8. “The filly was at the OBS sale and breezed with the blinkers on,” Brisset said. “At first, we never really thought the blinkers could be something we put back on her, but in her last race Flavien just felt like when the winner went on the outside of him and by him, she could have maybe fought on a little bit more.” Brisset hopes the equipment will lead to a more focused filly. “Each race I feel like she’s getting more mature physically,” he said. “She’s grown, has put some weight on, has put some muscle on. She’s really training forward since her last start.” Gambling Girl is chasing after her third straight win. Her streak began with a 10 3/4-length maiden special weight victory in August at Saratoga. She was making her stakes debut in the Gimma and closed from last under Irad Ortiz Jr., who again has the mount for Repole Stable and trainer Todd Pletcher. Other contenders include Im Just Kiddin, who is moving back to the main track following a fifth-place finish in the Grade 2 Miss Grillo, run over yielding turf Oct. 1 at Aqueduct. Jose Ortiz has the mount on the daughter of Triple Crown winner Justify for owners Chester and Mary Broman and trainer John Kimmel. The $200,000 Sleepy Hollow features 2-year-old colts and geldings at a mile, and the field of 10 is topped by stakes winner Jackson Heights. He won his maiden last out in the Bertram Bongard on Sept. 29 at Aqueduct. Jackson Heights closed from last for a two-length win over a number of rivals he faces again Sunday. Jackson Heights will break from post 7. :: DRF has you covered for the Belmont at the Big A meet!
