Trainer Peter Miller has a serious one-two punch for the $250,000 Zia Park Derby on Tuesday in Apprehend and Perfect Flight. “They’re both pretty nice 3-year-olds,” he said. The Zia Park Derby, which will be run over 1 1/16 miles, anchors the annual Land of Enchantment Day in New Mexico. There are a total of seven stakes on Zia’s card, and the races are worth a cumulative $900,000. The Zia Derby goes as the finale on a 10-race program that starts at noon Mountain. Apprehend figures to go favored in a field of six for the Zia Derby, which also drew Grade 3 Canadian Derby winner Great Escape and Grade 3 Sunland Derby runner-up Bye Bye Bobby. Apprehend is coming off second-level allowance win at Santa Anita on Oct. 8 in which he earned a career-high Beyer Speed Figure of 107. He rolled by 8 1/2 lengths in the mile race. “That was kind of a breakthrough race for him,” Miller said. “He beat tough older horses, and, first time around two turns. So, we’re excited for the Zia Park Derby.” Just a few starts prior, Apprehend had run second in an allowance won by C Z Rocket, who returned to finish second in the Breeders’ Cup Sprint earlier this month at Keeneland. Apprehend started his career with a runner-up finish to eventual champion Corniche. Apprehend is by Arrogate. :: DRF Bets members get FREE DRF Past Performances - Formulator or Classic. Perfect Flight enters off a third-place finish in the Grade 2 Twilight Derby on Oct. 29 at Santa Anita. The race was on the grass. One start prior, Perfect Flight won a first-level allowance at a mile on dirt, also at Santa Anita. “Every race we’ve run him, he’s run well,” Miller said. “He’s run well on grass and on dirt and he hasn’t disappointed. He’s training very well, so I expect him to run his race.” Florent Geroux has the mount on Perfect Flight for Gary Barber. Perfect Flight will start from post 2 and Apprehend from post 5. “I see them with kind of complementing styles,” Miller said. He looks for Apprehend to likely be up in the race and Perfect Flight sitting a little off the pace. Zia Park Oaks Southern California-based trainer John Sadler, who won the Breeders’ Cup Classic earlier this month with Flightline, will see action in the $250,000 Zia Park Oaks with Kirstenbosch. She is part of a field of six for the 1 1/16-mile race. Others set to start include Hits Pricey Legacy, winner of the Grade 3 Remington Park Oaks, and Cleopatra’s Charge, winner of the $300,000 Sunland Park Oaks. Kirstenbosch is moving back to dirt after a close fifth-place finish in a second-level allowance route on turf at Santa Anita. Earlier in her career, she won her maiden on turf. The last time Kirstenbosch ran on the main track she won a first-level allowance at Del Mar. “I think she’s better on the dirt,” Sadler said. “She’s stakes-placed over here, and we’d like to win a stakes with her. She’s a nice, big filly. She’s a good fit.” Vazquez has the mount from post 4 for breeder and owner Keith Abrahams. “She runs up close,” Sadler said. Hits Pricey Legacy is back with straight 3-year-olds after facing older rivals in the Oklahoma Classics Distaff at Remington Park. She ran third to multiple stakes winner She’s All Wolfe. David Cabrera has the mount on Hits Pricey Legacy for breeder, owner, and trainer C.R. Trout. Corrina Corrina defeated males at Albuquerque in September’s Casino at the Downs Derby. Bella Runner will get good support as a daughter of Gun Runner and the Grade 1-winning mare Love and Pride. Geroux has the mount on the Three Chimneys homebred for trainer Steve Asmussen, who last year swept the Zia Derby and Zia Oaks. Zia Park Championship Tripoli, who won last year’s Grade 1 Pacific Classic at Del Mar, is in from Southern California for the $100,000 Zia Park Distance Championship. The race, which will be run over 1 1/8 miles, also drew millionaire Silver Prospector and Mine That Star, a multiple stakes-winning half-brother to Kentucky Derby winner Mine That Bird. Tripoli was second in a Santa Anita allowance route in his last start Nov. 6. He’s run six times since winning the Pacific Classic, with his other efforts coming in graded stakes against a slew of top-class horses. :: Get Daily Racing Form Past Performances – the exclusive home of Beyer Speed Figures “I just want to move him away from some of the hammerheads around here,” Sadler said. “He was second the other day, got in a little traffic trouble. I just want to get a ‘W’ with him.” Tripoli will break from post 2, with Vazquez up for Hronis Racing. “He sits a little off the pace,” Sadler said. “He’s not a horse that comes from way back.” Mine That Star won the local prep, the Veterans, by eight lengths last out. ◗ Flying Connection makes her stakes debut in the $75,000 Princess for 2-year-old fillies following a 15 1/4-length maiden win at Zia. “We’ve always thought very highly of her,” trainer Todd Fincher said. “She’s a pretty nice filly.” Fincher will saddle the Nyquist colt Malmo in the $75,000 Juvenile. Both of the races are over six furlongs. ◗ Samurai Charm will be looking for her second straight stakes win at the meet in the $75,000 Zia Park Distaff at six furlongs following her powerful win in the Chaves County. She won off by 4 3/4 lengths, with a Beyer of 87. “She ran great,” Miller said. “We’re hoping she can repeat that race. I think if she repeats that, she’ll be tough.” Miller said she has remained in New Mexico since the Chaves County. ◗ The $75,000 Zia Park Sprint field of eight boasts five runners who have won at least one stakes in their last 12 starts. They include Grade 3 winner Mighty Mischief. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering? Check out DRF's Handicapping 101 and Wagering 101 pages.
