The chaos that dominated the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile at Santa Anita on Nov. 1 affected third-place finisher Wrecking Crew as much as it did odds-on favorite Dennis’ Moment, who stumbled badly at the start. Wrecking Crew was fourth on the backstretch, but lost momentum when racing in traffic on the final turn. The ridgling eventually finished third by 3 1/4 lengths behind the upset winner Storm the Court at 45-1. Trainer Peter Miller thought Wrecking Crew should have been the upset winner at 39-1. “I honestly felt he was the best horse that day,” Miller recalled on Wednesday. Miller has regrouped with Wrecking Crew and is planning to start him in Saturday’s Grade 2 Los Alamitos Futurity at 1 1/16 miles, a race with a strong history of providing clues for the Triple Crown preps. The $200,000 Los Alamitos Futurity is a race Miller knows well, having won the 2010 running at Hollywood Park when the race was known as the CashCall Hollywood Futurity. Nearly a decade later, Wrecking Crew is considered a prospect for the major 3-year-old races of 2020. “We want to get to the Kentucky Derby if he shows he can get the distance,” Miller said. Wrecking Crew, who races for Rockingham Ranch and David Bernsen, won his debut on July 27 at Del Mar and was second in the Grade 2 Best Pal Stakes at six furlongs in August and the Grade 1 Del Mar Futurity at seven furlongs on Sept. 1. He was held out of the Grade 1 American Pharoah Stakes at Santa Anita in late September in favor of the BC Juvenile at 1 1/16 miles, his first start around two turns. Abel Cedillo, who led the jockey standings at the Del Mar autumn meeting, which ended on Sunday, will have the mount on Wrecking Crew in the Los Alamitos Futurity. Cedillo was aboard Wrecking Crew for a second in the Del Mar Futurity and is the first jockey to ride him twice. “He’s worked him the last two weeks and has been impressed,” Miller said. The probable starters for the Los Alamitos Futurity include Anneau d’Or, who was second in the BC Juvenile, and Thousand Words, a maiden race winner at Santa Anita in October for trainer Bob Baffert. Baffert said on Wednesday he will not run Eight Rings, who won the American Pharoah Stakes and was sixth in the BC Juvenile. Eight Rings will be pointed for the Grade 2 San Vicente Stakes at seven furlongs at Santa Anita on Feb. 9. “We thought we’d wait a little bit and freshen him up,” Baffert said. The Los Alamitos Futurity will not include Honor A. P., a promising maiden race winner at Santa Anita in October. Trainer John Shirreffs said earlier this week that Honor A. P. will be pointed for the Grade 3 Sham Stakes at Santa Anita on Jan. 4. The most prestigious race of the two-week Los Alamitos meeting is Saturday’s Grade 1 Starlet Stakes for 2-year-old fillies at 1 1/16 miles. The field of expected runners is led by Donna Veloce, who was a game second in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies at Santa Anita on Nov. 1 in her second start and stakes debut.
