Papi Rob Hanover didn't mess around in his $25,000 Adios elimination for 3-year-old pacing colts and geldings on Saturday at The Meadows, moving to the lead in the second quarter on his way to a world record 1:47 1/5 victory. The Greek Freak and Catch The Fire captured the other two eliminations for next Saturday's $375,000 final. Driven by David Miller, Papi Rob Hanover sat second to Captain Barbossa (Andrew McCarthy) at the 25 3/5 opening quarter but popped out of the two-hole to take control as they raced in the stretch for the first time. Once he had command, Papi Rob Hanover reached the half in 53 3/5 and the three-quarters in 1:20 3/5 and had plenty left to give from there, drawing away with every stride to the wire. No Lou Zing (Josert Fonseca) overcame a tough trip from the outside post seven to finish third, then was elevated to second when unofficial runner-up Sweet Truth (Yannick Gingras) was placed behind him for being inside two consecutive pylons on the first turn and lapped-on at the wire. No Lou Zing and Sweet Truth both finished 10 1/2 lengths behind Papi Rob Hanover. The 1:47 1/5 clocking lowered Betting Line's previous world record of 1:47 2/5 for a colt pacer on a five-eighths-mile track and also was the fastest mile ever at The Meadows. A Somebeachsomewhere colt, Papi Rob Hanover is trained by Brett Pelling for owner David McDuffee. This was Papi Rob Hanover's seventh career win, and he has now earned $927,979. The 1-9 favorite, he paid $2.10 to win. "He came out of the Meadowlands Pace great, and he proved he needs to race. He just needs more racing," Pelling said. "Every race has been better than the one before, so he's on the right track. "Could he bounce off that? He's a big, strong horse. Nothing's ever knocked him around yet, so he'll be fine." In the first elimination The Greek Freak (Matt Kakaley) won his fourth consecutive race, halting the teletimer in a career-best 1:49 4/5. Kakaley put him right on the engine from post four and clicked off fractions of 27, 56, and 1:23. As they entered the stretch pocket-sitter Sandbetweenmytoes (Dave Palone) was right behind The Greek Freak but made a break while moving to the outside, eliminating him from contention and allowing The Greek Freak to go on and win by half a length. Later Dudes (D. Miller) finished well on the inside from the three-hole to get second, with Chief Mate (Scott Zeron) coming from sixth to third in the last quarter. "He's getting better every start," said Kakaley. "He was really, really good again today. We got an easy second quarter. That's what we wanted to do, save some for next week. I'm really happy with him and looking forward to next week." The Greek Freak, a gelding by Captaintreacherous, is trained by Ron Burke for owners Burke Racing Stable LLC., Piatt Racing LLC., J&T Silva- Purnel & Libby, and Weaver Bruscemi LLC. The Greek Freak, named after Milawukee Bucks superstar and NBA Most Valuable Player Giannis Antetokounmpo, is now a four-time winner from 14 tries, and he has pocketed $88,076. He returned $4.60 to win as the wagering choice. Catch The Fire (Mike Wilder) also led at every call in the final elimination, picking up a new lifetime mark of 1:49 3/5 in victory. Catch The Fire, starting from the outside post seven, blasted out and got to the quarter in a quick 26 2/5 but was able to ease back the pace to the half, which went on the board in just 55 seconds. Capt Midnight (McCarthy) attacked first-over out of fourth in the third quarter and battled with Catch The Fire to the 1:22 4/5 three-quarters, around the last turn, and through the lane, but just couldn't get by, as Catch The Fire won by a head. Elver Hanover (Chris Page) checked in third from the pocket. "He could have been fourth or fifth in the Meadowlands Pace final, but we got hung up at the top of the lane," Wilder said. "When you're going miles in 1:47, you can't get stopped. Today I wanted to make my own luck. He showed up like he always does." John Ackley trains Catch The Fire, a Captaintreacherous colt, for owner CT Stables LLC. Catch The Fire has a record of 5-3-3 from 16 efforts, and he pushed his bankroll to $278,913. He paid $8.20 to win. --quotes courtesy of The Meadows--
