Trainer Nancy Takter had Pretender and Looks Like Moni ready in tonight's second leg of the New Jersey Sire Stakes at the Meadowlands, with both 3-year-old male trotters posting 1:51 4/5 national-season's-best victories under the guidance of Yannick Gingras. Pretender, coming off a break as the favorite in the Dexter Cup, brushed to the lead just after the 56 3/5 half in the second $30,000 division and went on to win by 3 3/4 lengths over Testing Testing (David Miller). B A Superhero (Tim Tetrick) finished third. "He was just a little bit wide in the Dexter Cup," said Takter. "He needed one more step to get around a horse to his inside or he wouldn't have gone off-stride. Tonight, he was super. He gets a little bit anxious, so I left an ear hood on him to make sure he stayed quiet. If he continues to develop, we are trending toward the direction of the Hambletonian." Bred by co-owners John Fielding, Herb Liverman, and Joyce McClelland, Pretender posted his fourth career win and has now earned $133,128. Caviart Farms also co-owns the victorious Muscle Hill colt who paid $8.00 to win. In the third flight for colts and geldings, Looks Like Moni posted fractions of 27 2/5, 56 2/5, and 1:24 3/5 on his way to a one length victory over Senna (Dexter Dunn). Majestic J (Todd McCarthy) finished third. "He was a little bit of his own worst enemy as a 2-year-old," said Takter. "So we gelded him and it's made a world of difference. He was constantly kicking the walls in his stall. Gelding him has made him tougher. Now, he fights. He was better this week than last. He's still not perfect. I think they are both good horses. It wasn't out of the realm that they would do that [establish the national-season's best], but both are not as perfect as they could be at this point." A homebred for Brittany Farms, Marvin Katz, and Al Libfeld, Looks Like Moni is a Muscle Hill gelding. He made his second stop in the winner's circle, has now pocketed $109,139, and returned $3.60 to win. Temporal Hanover (Brian Sears), a first leg winner, also won in the second round, turning a second-over trip off panels of 28, 56 3/5, and 1:25 1/5 into a two length triumph in 1:52 3/5 in the opening test for the boys. Brave By Design (Joe Bongiorno), the Dexter Cup champion, was second from the pocket, and Villain (Ake Svanstedt) grabbed third. Marcus Melander trains Temporal Hanover, a Walner colt bred by Hanover Shoe Farms, for owners AMG Stable Inc., Kenneth Kjellgren, Rick Wahlstedt, and Heights Stable. Temporal Hanover has compiled a record of 7-2-1 from 14 appearances, has now put away $237,666, and paid $3.40 to win. The first grouping for filly trotters saw Jiggy Jog S (Ake Svanstedt) get by a stubborn pace-setter Jaya Bae (Sears) in the stretch from first-over to score by a head in 1:52 2/5. Misswalner Fashion (Tetrick) was third. Svanstedt also trains Jiggy Jog S, a daughter of Walner bred by Vestmarka AB, for owner Jorgen Sparredal Inc. Jiggy Jog S is now a three-time winner from 13 trips behind the gate and has stashed away $225,974. She returned $5.00 to win. Fashion Schooner (Tetrick) moved out of fourth in the backstretch, took command after the 56 2/5 half, and pulled away from there to win the other filly trot tilt by 3 3/4 lengths in 1:52. Peyton Hanover (Dunn) was next, followed by Primadonna Deo (Andy McCarthy). Fashion Farms bred and owns Fashion Schooner, a Walner filly trained by Jim Campbell. This was her second triumph in six efforts, and she now has a bankroll of $30,062. Fashion Schooner paid $2.60 to win. ► Sign up for our FREE DRF Harness Digest Newsletter Lis Mara gelding Count Mara (Tetrick / John Pyott, 1:59 2/5) and Great Vintage filly Bee Aware (Steve Smith, Laurie Molnar, 1:54 3/5) repeated their round one wins in tonight's second leg of the New Jersey Sire Stakes for 3-year-old pacers.
