Trainer Chris Ryder knows what it's like sending out 3-year-olds against older rivals in stakes competition. In 2019 he put Bettor's Wish in against older rivals in the TVG Final at the Meadowlands, and the top sophomore put in a phenomenal effort but finished second. Last year, Ryder sent out Niki Hill against a field of older mares, and the brilliant filly finished second to champion Grace Hill but raced bravely in defeat. On both occasions Ryder's sophomores landed disadvantageous post positions and were forced to follow rather than lead. The course could be different for Ryder and Twin B Joe Fresh on Saturday night as the team has drawn inside with co-owner Dexter Dunn set to guide the sophomore filly against four older rivals in the $175,000 FanDuel Championship, race four of 14 on Saturday night's stakes-filled Meadowlands program. "I definitely think the 3-year-olds can beat the older horses," said Ryder on Tuesday before finding out where his filly had landed in the field. "I definitely wanted to race her and was happy to find there weren't going to be a lot of horses in the field." Twin B Joe Fresh has gone to war against an outstanding group of sophomore fillies headed by Breeders Crown champion Sylvia Hanover, and perhaps that competition will serve Twin B Joe Fresh as she goes up against older rivals. "I was very happy with her qualifier," Ryder said. "I didn't want to see her spin a 1:50 mile on the front-end, and it worked out perfectly." Twin B Joe Fresh qualified last Saturday (November 18), racing from well off-the-pace and finishing her mile in 26 seconds. A daughter of Roll With Joe, Twin B Joe Fresh is co-owned by Ryder, who, along with his partners, have elected to bring Twin B Joe Fresh back next year. In essence that makes Saturday's contest the first of many likely confrontations between her and the group she'll meet in the FanDuel. Max Contract enters the race in peak form for trainer Julie Miller, having swept both her elimination and the final of the Breeders Crown at Harrah's Hoosier Park in October. A winner this year in eight of her 14 starts, Max Contract landed post three. Rounding out the field are Racine Bell (post one), Mikala (post four) and Boudoir Hanover (post five). ► Sign up for our FREE DRF Harness Digest Newsletter In Saturday's much-anticipated $350,000 FanDuel Championship Open Pace, Ryder sends out Tattoo Artist, making his final appearance on the racetrack before a 2024 career change to stallion duty. "He's a real warrior," said Ryder describing the 6-year-old son of He's Watching that he's had the pleasure of training in the States for Dr. Ian Moore. "He's coming into the race in as good as shape as he's ever been." Tattoo Artist landed post four in the field of 10, carded as race 11, and looks to regain his winning form with Louis Roy in the bike. Tattoo Artist also qualified last Saturday and his 1:51 2/5 effort appears to set him up nicely for his final track appearance. The Ryder trainee will start next to the likely favorite Bythemissal (post three) and look to upset the Breeders Crown champion that has gotten the better of him in his last two starts. Confederate drew post nine for the FanDuel Open Pace, and the likely Horse of the Year will need to be at the top of his game to defeat older rivals. That said, Confederate has been virtually flawless this season in winning 13 of his 14 starts, with the lone defeat coming by just a head margin in the North America Cup. Good early and even better late in the season, Confederate followed up his impressive scores in the Breeders Crown and Matron with a winning 1:51 2/5 qualifier at the Meadowlands this past Saturday. "I don't see any reason why Confederate or Twin B Joe Fresh can't win," said Ryder in advance of the draw. While Ryder has but one horse entered in the FanDuel championship in Tattoo Artist, trainer Ron Burke not only sends out Bythemissal but has two others in Southwind Gendry (post one) and Lou's Pearlman (post eight) that could have a say in how the race is run. Trainer Brett Pelling also has a pair with Allywag Hanover (post six) joining his younger entrymate Confederate in the contest. Two other sophomores will try to defeat older rivals, with Hambletonian winner Tactical Approach and driver Scott Zeron taking on six rivals in the $350,000 FanDuel Championship for open trotters. The lone 3-year-old in the field landed the rail and faces six rivals, half of which come from the powerful Ake Svanstedt stable. Alrajah One (post three), Southwind Tyrion (post five) and Rattle My Cage (post seven) form a powerful uncoupled entry. Breeders Crown runner-up It's Academic (post four) hopes to regain his winning form for trainer Ron Burke. Svanstedt's Bond is the lone sophomore filly against mares in the $175,000 FanDuel Championship. Fresh off her victory in the Breeders Crown, Bond deals with a pair of more seasoned rivals, including stablemate Jiggy Jog S from post two in the evening's sixth race. Jiggy Jog S was also a Breeders Crown winner for Svanstedt and will have Dexter Dunn in the bike from post four for the FanDuel. Trainer Ron Burke has 25-time winner M-M's Dream (post one) hoping for an upset in the field of five. The FanDuel Championships are part of a stellar Saturday card that also includes four rich finals for 2-year-olds worth north of $1.6 million. The first of 14 races starts at 6:20 PM (ET), with $75,000 guaranteed Pick 4 wagers in races six and 10.
