Marty McGee, who has covered racing for Daily Racing Form for 31 years, has resigned to become the agent for jockey Joe Talamo, the reporter announced on Tuesday. McGee posted the announcement on social media, saying that “Joe and I are very excited about what the future holds. He’s an immense talent who belongs among the game’s elite.” McGee’s last day for Daily Racing Form will be May 6, Kentucky Derby day. McGee, who won an Eclipse Award in 2013 in the Feature/Commentary category, referred to his social-media post when asked for comment. McGee, who was based in Kentucky and Florida, got his start as a racing writer in 1985 at the Baltimore Sun. He said in his social-media post that he has filed racing stories “from 17 different states and was privileged to meet thousands of wonderful people [and horses] along the way.” McGee comes from a racing family. His brother Paul is a trainer based in Kentucky, and the daughter of his sister is married to Talamo. Talamo has topped $5 million in purse earnings since 2015. His biggest year as a rider was 2012, when he had $11.85 million in earnings, which was ninth in the U.S. that year, from 208 wins.
