OZONE PARK, N.Y. – Jockey Trevor McCarthy, injured in a spill on Nov. 18 at Aqueduct, got back on horses Tuesday morning for the first time in nearly three months and is targeting a March 3 return. McCarthy suffered a fractured collarbone and a pelvic injury when he went down during the running of the sixth race on Nov. 18. On Tuesday, he jogged three horses and galloped one over the Belmont Park training track. On Wednesday, he galloped three horses and jogged one. “Just scraping off the cobwebs and the dust, getting fit,” McCarthy said late Wednesday morning. “I feel great. I definitely have to get my legs back a little bit. I’ve been working out in the gym for a few weeks, doing the physical therapy. I’m not too far off where I want to be.” McCarthy said that while it was difficult mentally being sidelined for three months, it afforded him the opportunity to spend more time with his wife, jockey Katie Davis, and their 14-month-old daughter. Still, he looks forward to getting back to work. :: Take your handicapping to the next level and play with FREE DRF Past Performances - Formulator or Classic.  “I was able to spend that quality time with my child and my wife, but I’m ready to get back,” McCarthy said. “A lot of people were happy to see me again, looking forward for me coming back, and that has definitely given me the mental support to want to come back and want to do good again.” In 2022, McCarthy was the eighth-leading rider in wins on the New York Racing Association circuit with 104 and ranked 10th in purse money won ($8,063,443). He also won the first Grade 1 of his career when he guided Highland Chief to victory in the Man o’ War at Belmont in May. McCarthy was at Aqueduct on Sunday to watch his wife win the $100,000 Broadway Stakes aboard Funny How. McCarthy had ridden the filly in her first four starts, including the first two wins of the filly’s five-race winning streak, but said that Katie deserves to keep the mount when that filly runs back, expected to be in the Grade 3 Distaff on April 7 at Aqueduct. “That was really good for her,” he said. “I’m really proud of her. I hope they stick with her, which I think they will. She’s won two in a row on her. I couldn’t be more happy for her.” :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
