LEXINGTON, Ky. - May Day Ready loomed up alongside leader Totally Justified and appeared ready to surge by for the win. Then, mayday. Destino d'Oro, who had been seventh in midstretch, charged up alongside the top two on the outside. Totally Justified, on the rail, found more. And May Day Ready suddenly found herself in tight quarters between the two with their heads bobbing to the wire. But May Day Ready, with Frankie Dettori in the irons, prevailed in the Grade 2, $350,000 Jessamine Stakes for 2-year-old fillies Friday on the Keeneland turf, the top finishers separated by noses on the line in a three-way photo, with Totally Justified second and Destino d’Oro third. Adding drama to the situation, jockey Francisco Arrieta, atop Mechaya, another 2 1/2 lengths back in fourth, claimed foul against Totally Justified and Manny Franco, alleging interference in midstretch. The objection was disallowed, and the order stood. It was a triumphant day for Dettori, who won a pair of races from four mounts for his first wins since suffering a separated shoulder. Dettori was injured in a starting gate mishap on Sept. 19 at Aqueduct and returned to riding on Sept. 29 in New York. :: SAVE BIG with a DRF Keeneland Handicapping Package "To be honest with you, I thought Flavien [Prat, on Destino d’Oro] beat me on the line, so I was a little bit frustrated, but it all came out," Dettori said. "I’m super delighted. . . . Even if she would have got beaten today in the photograph, I would have loved to ride her in the [Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf]. But now we don’t have to worry about it, because she’s in and we are going." The Jessamine was a Win and You're In toward the Juvenile Fillies Turf, on Nov. 1 at Del Mar. May Day Ready ($10.80) should go forward as one of the choices, as she is unbeaten in three starts for KatieRich Farms and trainer Joseph Lee, and has now won a pair of stakes. She came into the Jessamine off a win in the Kentucky Downs Juvenile Fillies on Sept 8. On Friday, after the field of inexperienced runners were unloaded and reloaded following the gate scratch of Isle of Capri, May Day Ready was bothered early as several horses inside of her bumped at the break. May Day Ready found herself eighth, further back than her last race, and Dettori found himself having to make up ground through traffic in a field of 11. "She had to do it the hard way. She got a bit restless in the gate and a bit keen in the first turn," Dettori said. "I had to go the brave-man route. The gaps were a lot smaller than I anticipated, but she skipped through it." Shezafunkydrummer broke sharply and was very keen the first time through the stretch in the opening quarter, but slowed the pace down for a more moderate half in 48.41 seconds. Totally Justified, was sitting sweetly in third and in the clear, getting what jockey Manny Franco described as a "beautiful trip." The last-out winner of the P.G. Johnson Stakes at Saratoga, Totally Justified made her bid into the stretch, and looked good as she opened up a 1 1/2-length lead before being beset by challengers. The top three came to the line in 1:44.10 for the 1 1/16 miles on turf rated firm. The Jessamine was the first Keeneland winner trained by Lee. :: BREEDERS’ CUP JUVENILE FILLIES TURF: See DRF’s special section with top contenders, odds, comments, news, and more “Even if you watch the race at Kentucky Downs, she kind of got squeezed when they got to the bottom over there, and Frankie just held his position," said Lee. "She has a lot of heart, I’ve gotta say. “Even her first race, her moves down the backside and around the turn, and then she was fortunate to hold off [the winner] coming on at the end. So she’s definitely talented, and she’s the reason why I’m standing here." After the top four came Italian Soiree, Shezafunkydrummer, Sashay Away, Ballerina d'Oro, Somethinabouther, Miss Lonelle, and Give Life. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
