ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Mansetti redeemed himself with the addition of blinkers in Sunday’s $150,000 Clarendon Stakes at Woodbine, winning the six-furlong dash for 2-year-olds in front-running style under Leo Salles. Mansetti vied for the lead with Dark Screen through quick fractions before opening up a clear lead in the stretch and holding on to prevail by 1 1/4 lengths, in a time of 1:10.81. Call Me Sue rallied three-wide to finish second over another closing longshot, the slow-starting Awesome Beat. Favored Patriotic War, Dark Screen, and French Horn completed the order of finish in the race for Ontario-bred/sired runners. Mansetti ($11.60) gave trainer Kevin Attard his 11th stakes win at the meet. He notched his debut Sept. 26 before a fading sixth in the Oct. 13 Display Stakes. :: Bet with the Best! Maybe we kinda rushed him back in that second start, but he came into this race and prepped really well. In his last work, we put blinkers on, had Leo come in and get on him, and I thought he worked sensational. “I knew, with the blinkers, he’d be a little more speedier today. I was concerned on paper that it looked like there was some other speed. When (Dark Screen) shot up there and the two of them were opening up on the field, you always get concerned how much is going to be left in the tank after those taxing fractions, but the horse was good enough to hang on and repel the challenges. I thought Leo rode a smart race.” Mansetti, a $40,000 2-year-old purchase, earned $90,000 for owners Al and Bill Ulwelling. The son of Collected was bred by Jim Rome’s Jungle Racing. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering? Check out DRF's Handicapping 101 and Wagering 101 pages.
