Longshot Mano Dura overhauled the heavily favored Heroic Move in the stretch before drawing clear to land the 75th running of the $126,000 Manitoba Derby on Monday night at Assiniboia Downs. With leading rider Antonio Whitehall aboard, Mano Dura ran in a stalking position from the outset in the 1 1/8-mile event for 3-year-olds. Heroic Move, under Rico Walcott, dueled with stablemate B Minor through an opening quarter in 23.60 seconds before opening up a daylight lead on the backstretch. Heroic Move set fractions of 47.64 and 1:11.88 before being overtaken at the eighth pole by Mano Dura, who went on to score by 4 1/4 lengths, in a time of 1:51.87. Tshiebwe finished a distant third and was followed by Green Amazon, Discovery Peak, Saxon Saga, Rough Customer, B Minor, and Chicago’s Gray. Neighbor was scratched at the gate. A son of Keen Ice, Mano Dura paid $32.80 and banked $76,500 in his second start after getting claimed for $50,000 at Lone Star in June. The carryover going into the program was nearly $600,000, and an additional $1.86 million was wagered. The payout was $5,689 for a $1.
