RACE 6: DREAMS OF TOMORROW is back on his preferred turf surface following a short layoff, during which he worked strongly on the dirt at his Payson Park base. He fits the nonwinners of a race since July 31 condition of this event nicely, with his last score coming in a conditioned allowance/optional claimer May 11 at Belmont. FAR BRIDGE and LUCKY SCORE were both competitive in graded stakes last year before getting some time off and are obvious contenders with the hot Ortiz brothers along for the ride. (3) RACE 7: The $700,000 yearling buy DERBY STREET has worked strongly at Gulfstream, and the son of classic winner Street Sense is from the family of champion Gun Runner. Going back five years, 2023 Eclipse Award-winning trainer Bill Mott has won at a 6 percent clip with first-timers in dirt routes, with a positive return on investment of $2.04. MILITARY ROAD and BIG CITY were both competitive against some salty opposition in one-turn maiden special weight events while earning Beyer Speed Figures over 80. TOMMY TWO SOCKS is adding blinkers and Lasix after ending up 10th at first asking in a sprint that contained five next-out winners. RACE 8: APRIL’S DIAMANTE came up empty when exiting a layoff in a dirt route at Tampa that was yanked off the grass. Both of her turf races were good, and she’s adding blinkers while being reunited with the capable Jorge Ruiz, who rode her to her maiden win at Colonial. WOW LUCKY has won on turf and Tapeta. The closer has ample speed to chase down in this starter/optional claimer. BOOMIN’ BELLE could be the dominant front-runner in her first route try on the lawn, in her third start off the sidelines. (3) RACE 9: HOLIDAY FANTASY improved significantly last time when second while jumping up to this level in his debut for hot trainer Julie Stormfelt. She was 2 for 5 second time off a claim during the past two years, with an ROI of $3.56. MAUNA KEA BOUND was in fine form before his recent fade job in an identical spot where he had no apparent excuse. He deserves a mulligan with Joel Rosario subbing for Luis Saez, who is in Dubai. CLASSIFY was freshened after his troubled fifth as the favorite Jan. 28. Note that he graduated with authority going seven furlongs the last time he returned from a break in October. PAT’S DAY after they ran one-two all the way around in another turf dash March 3. Wide West drew inside of St. Pat’s Day this time, and the blue-blooded daughter of Frankel could make all the running in her second start off a five-month layoff. St. Pat’s Day doesn’t need the lead, and it will be interesting to see if she regresses much, or at all, off the career-high 91 Beyer she got that day. (2) RACE 11: The debuting BRAID looked professional in her Palm Beach Downs dirt works, for the most part, and could prevail in this one-mile maiden special on the grass for the dynamic duo of Irad Ortiz Jr. and Todd Pletcher. The daughter of successful turf sire American Pharoah is a half-sister to multiple Group 1 winner and world-traveler Hawkbill. PAST TENSE rallied for third behind the promising Sweet Rebecca in her latest and could improve with blinkers on. MIDNIGHT PROWLER possesses turf breeding on the dam’s side. Her esteemed trainer, Michael Matz, has solid numbers with first-timers in grass routes going back five years. (3) THE PLAY: 1, 3, 4 / 1, 2, 6, 9 / 2, 3, 8 / 1, 7, 9 / 5, 9 / 3, 6, 8 = $129.60 ticket   :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
