There were two winners by double-digit lengths at Santa Anita in the final week of December. Flightline cruised to a shockingly easy win in his stakes debut by 11 1/2 lengths in the Grade 1 Malibu Stakes on Dec. 26 to remain unbeaten in three starts. Five days later, the first-time starter Distractedprincess won a maiden special weight race at seven furlongs by 13 lengths as the 3-10 favorite. Distractedprincess will be a heavy favorite to win her first start against winners in an allowance race for fillies and mares at a mile at Santa Anita on Sunday. Trained by Bob Baffert, Distractedprincess is by Distorted Humor and is out of Public Princess, a Brazilian-bred mare who won two Group 1 races in Brazil as well as the Grade 2 Royal Heroine Stakes at a mile on turf at Hollywood Park in 2011 in her final start. :: For the first time ever, our premium past performances are free! Distractedprincess is part of a field of five that includes Fi Fi Pharoah, who won the Melair Stakes for California-bred 3-year-old fillies last June but is winless in her last seven starts. Trouville, trained by Leonard Powell, will have her first start since November in the allowance race. Trouville was a good third in a race at this level at Del Mar on Nov. 19, leading narrowly in the stretch before finishing three-quarters of a length behind Velvet Slippers. While Distractedprincess will be a short-priced favorite in the eighth race, Sunday’s seventh race is an allowance race at about 6 1/2 furlongs on the hillside turf course that drew a more competitive field. Carpe Fortuna, Glesga Gal, Honey Jar, Miss Costa Rica, That’s Amare, and Ultimate Hy have attractive recent form that can translate to a win. :: Want to start playing with a $510 bankroll and have access to free Formulator? Learn more That’s Amare won an allowance race for statebred fillies and mares at six furlongs on turf by two lengths on Jan. 2 in her first start since April. She is trained by Phil D’Amato. This will be the second start in a sprint on the hillside course for Carpe Fortuna, who was second in the Unzip Me Stakes for 3-year-old fillies on the course on Oct. 1. Trained by Peter Eurton, Carpe Fortuna has not started since a sixth-place finish in an allowance race at a mile on turf at Del Mar on Nov. 3. Velazquez rides Carpe Fortuna for the first time on Sunday and is likely to have the filly near the pace. “Being that she’s fresh, we’re hoping for that,” Eurton said. Eurton said he debated whether to wait for a one-mile allowance race with Carpe Fortuna, but chose Sunday’s race after reflecting on her second in the Unzip Me Stakes. “She ran such a good race down the hill,” he said. “We may not see another down-the-hill race for six weeks.”
