Los Alamitos will race two days this week and not at all next week, canceling Friday’s program because of an expected rainstorm and taking a scheduled winter break next week. Los Alamitos is the second California track to preemptively cancel racing Friday. Santa Anita also announced that it would not race Friday. Both tracks are scheduled to race on Saturday and Sunday. The Super Bowl is being played on Sunday, Feb. 7, and in recent years Los Alamitos has not raced that week. A week off in mid-winter is seen as a way to give human and equine participants a rest before racing resumes Feb. 12. The track holds a year-round evening meeting for Quarter Horses and lower-level Thoroughbreds.Field sizes are a persistent issue during the winter before the 2-year-old program begins in April. Through Sunday, fields have averaged 5.83 runners per race since the meeting began Dec. 26 compared to 6.07 runners per race during a similar time early in the 2019-20 meeting. The entire 2019-20 meeting averaged 6.22 runners per race. The track will reopen for daytime simulcasting of Thoroughbred races beginning Saturday. The state earlier this week relaxed stay-at-home orders for many businesses during the pandemic.Spectators will not be allowed for live racing in the evenings, a policy that has been in place since last March.Up for Speed leads qualifiersUp for Speed, who was recently purchased privately by trainer Roman Figueroa and his wife, Brenda, is the fastest qualifier for the $157,750 Brad McKinzie Los Alamitos Winter Championship on Feb. 14 after winning a division of the time trials on a sloppy track Sunday.Up for Speed was previously owned by Los Alamitos track owner Ed Allred and trained by Scott Willoughby.
