LEXINGTON, Ky. – The most important test is right around the corner, but the task for Letruska on Sunday at Keeneland is no easy quiz. Getting her final prep for the Breeders’ Cup as the leader of the filly and mare dirt division, Letruska will be asked to outrun some pretty accomplished foes as a heavy favorite in the 66th running of the Grade 1, $500,000 Spinster Stakes. Envoutante, Crystal Ball, Bonny South, and Dunbar Road are among the six opponents looking to surprise Letruska if, for some reason, the speedy 5-year-old mare doesn’t bring her typical effort to the 1 1/8-mile Spinster, a Win and You’re In event toward the BC Distaff on Nov. 6 at Del Mar. “This is a very important race for her,” said Fausto Gutierrez, who trains Letruska for the St. George Stable of Mexican billionaire German Larrea. “She has had a perfect year, yes, and finally this is the last preparation for the Breeders’ Cup. Right now, we have to concentrate on this race Sunday. After that, we can start talking about preparations for going to California.” Superstar jockey Irad Ortiz Jr. will be in from New York and will be aboard Letruska from post 4. Letruska’s five wins from six starts this year include triumphs in the Apple Blossom, Ogden Phipps, and Personal Ensign, all of them Grade 1’s. The Kentucky-bred daughter of Super Saver has earned triple-digit Beyer Speed Figures in each of her last four starts. :: Shop for Keeneland: Get DRF Past Performances, Picks, and more Strategy for Letruska in the Spinster will be a familiar one – go to the front and stay there. “That’s the thing,” said Ken McPeek, trainer of Envoutante (post 5, Brian Hernandez Jr.), one of the logical candidates to apply early pressure to Letruska. “If you try to run with her early, you end up paying in the end. You’re damned if you do and damned if you don’t. We’ll have to come up with something.” Likewise, trainer Rudy Brisset said Crystal Ball (post 6, Tyler Gaffalione) also might press Letruska, although “you have to play that kind of thing on the break.” “Our filly ran very well in her last race,” said Brisset, referring to a runner-up finish behind Distaff-bound Shedaresthedevil in the Locust Grove on Sept. 18 at Churchill Downs, “and she is versatile. You don’t want to let Letruska get away easy, but you also don’t want to ruin your own chances.” Stretch-running contenders Bonny South (post 2, Florent Geroux) and Dunbar Road (post 1, Flavien Prat) both would seem to need an honest pace to develop ahead of them in order to register an upset. Both are multiple graded winners who finished second and fourth, respectively, behind Letruska when last they all met in the Personal Ensign on the Aug. 28 Travers card at Saratoga. Rounding out the Spinster lineup are longshots Town Avenger (post 3, Julien Leparoux) and High Regard (post 7, Rafael Bejarano). Letruska already has earned her expenses-paid berth to Del Mar. The connections of several of her rivals said they would probably run against Letruska in the Distaff if they beat her in the Spinster. Otherwise, they likely would be leery of trying Letruska yet again. :: BREEDERS’ CUP 2021: See DRF’s special section with top contenders, odds, comments, news, and more for each division Assuming all goes well Sunday, Gutierrez said he intends to have Letruska sent as early as possible to finish her pre-race training at Del Mar, where the stable area opens Oct. 23 and morning training begins Oct. 25. The Spinster goes as the ninth of 10 races on a Sunday card that ends the opening three-day FallStars Weekend of this fall meet. It’s surrounded by two other Win and You’re In races, the Indian Summer (race 8) and Bourbon (race 10), both for 2-year-olds on turf. Both of those supporting stakes are legs in the new $3-minimum Keeneland Turf Pick 3, which starts with race 6. First post daily at Keeneland is 1 p.m. Eastern. NBCSN will spotlight all three Sunday features on a 90-minute broadcast starting at 4:30 p.m. After Sunday, Keeneland goes dark for two days before a five-day week starts Wednesday with the last of 10 Win and You’re In races at the meet, the Grade 2 Jessamine for 2-year-old turf fillies.
